nissan terrano gearbox leak

hi. my nissan terrano II slx 2.7td 1994 lhd is losing gear box oil. i noticed the gears starting to be a bit stiff and grating. had a look underneath and can see a fair amount of oil it looks to be on the top of the main gearbox but can't see where it is coming from. i need to get some more oil in there before i get it properly looked at but can't even see where you put in more oil. can anybody help?? cheers

Not sure about Terrano boxes but most Nissans have a filler plug in the side of the box. Will probably have a square hole in it, you fill it until oil reaches the level of the plug and starts running out of the filler hole.

I have the same problem with my S2..., the problem has been already identified from leakage of transmission packing. Temporarily have to check the oil level not lower than low level until it is repaired when flushing oil.

thats great thanks for your replies. my car is manual gearbox - will there be a separate reservoir for the transmission? also when i flush out the rest of the old oil ( if there is any left in there ) do i need to flush it with some kind of special thin oil???? whats it called~?? cheers guys

i have a nissan terrano II 1994. 168,00 km with no service history. runs like a dream but recently had to replace gearbox. getting a bit paranoid about the cambelt as i have no idea if it has been changed in it's life. does anyone know how easy / difficult it is to change on this vehicle and if a quick inspection will tell me condition of the cambelt or does it need to be totally removed to know. cheers

The 2.7tdi unit doesn't have timing belt, or chain. It's internally gear driven.

It's generally a solid engine, just make sure you change the oil. As for the gearbox, the resevoir you asked about earlier in the year.. the oil is in the gearbox itself, it doesn't have a sump as such, it is the sump. As said earlier by another poster it has a square half inch (if memory serves) filling port, and yep just fill it up till it's level with that. There's a drain cap on the bottom with the same fitment square drive.

As for gearbox oil I can't remember what they take. One thing that is more common with them, is for the engine to leak oil at the top on the cam/rocker cover and for that to run down the engine, so be sure it's not that before you go blaming the gearbox
