Carburetor on EFI engine

This weekend I was offered tempting price of a Peugeot 405, It's said that the original EFI unit already replaced with carburetor for its failure producing excessive smoke.
How good carburetor will work to replace the broken EFI?
Clearly the mechanic involved is an idiot. How good carburetor will work to replace the broken EFI?
It took too long time when the owner was waiting for original EFI, being informed the EFI replacement available when carburetor already installed to the car. It has decent exterior and interior besides 405 SR was one model of pugs I like at most.
So, it's not recommended to buy the car?...

If it's a car than is modern enough to have EFI then it's probably going to have emissions specified which can only be met with EFI. With carbs you'd be lucky to pass anything stricter than 'no visible smoke'. So if it has a long MOT and you're willing to throw it away afterwards it might be OK if you consider it as a scrapper on borrowed time.GreenV8S said:
