Several of our friends have recently had babies - which is nice. However, I was wondering why they all felt the need to, often inform us before the gender of these bundles of love, the weight of such bundles. Personally all I'm interested in is (1) are Mum and babe okay; (2) boy or girl; names and weights seem rather too irrelavent given everything else - but I'm a bloke so what should I know?

Its probably something from days of old...the bigger the baby the better chance it had of reaching its 5th birthday etc..

Today modern science keeps many babies alive when in the old days they would simply have been to small to survive.

So don't be such a grump! It's a time of newfound joy for new parents for about 1 day and then it's misery personified for the next 3 months whilst jr has them up all night.

apart from the sex of the baby, what else can you ask? fills at least 10 seconds of silence wink plus you get to compare it to inanimate objects like a bowling ball etc redface

think the g/fs sister had a 12lb baby - now that has got to hurt!!!

Higher baby weight has been linked to better health, intelligence etc in later life.

I agree though it's bloody annoying.

I think women are interested as there is a huge variation - in one month in hospital th evariation in term baby size was 3lbs to 13lbs - clearly such a huge variation - giving birth to one not like another!

If you think that's a problem, you have no idea what's coming.

Discussions may revolve around the colour and consistency of poo, first walk, first word etc... and comparisons between friends about such things.......

Prepare for misery.

Not only confined to conversations between close friends - one of my friend's Facebook status (FFS) recently displayed the proud message

"fair play to the nappy for containing that one!"

Simple option is not to use Facebook!

Marrying a Midwfie is a big mistake, as everyone then wants to discuss babies and pregnancies all the time! And of couse the gorier (is that a word) the better!

So obese mothers who produce obese babies have more intelligent children? I wondered why they ate so much food.

That's not funny at all!

The babies' weight is an indication of their health, so I suppose that's why people share this info with their family & friends when a baby is born.
Otherwise what else to say apart from the gender, weight and the wellbeing of the mother & baby... Surely, you wouldn't want to hear about the 'ins & outs' of the birth!

I think it goes back to the days of high infant mortality - a 9-pounder was regarded as more likely to survive than a 6-pounder, hence we think of bigger is better (let's wait for a Panorama Special on 'infant obesity'.

I find medical things interesting so have to stop myself asking.

I don't think it will bother him that much, if they are like certain people on here they will trot out the line "Until you've had a child YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND" and never talk to him again.
