Help to save my spax

Can anyone help me i have Spax shock absorbers on my 1991 xr2i it was sitting too low so decided to change the springs the two backs were easy and one of the fronts wasnt too bad but the drivers side was a nightmare.
The shock has a nipple at the top then goes onto a shaft which has two flat sides then to the thread for the nut followed by the suspension top cup.
When i tried to undo the nut the whole lot turns so i got a 8mm spanner to hold the shaft that sits just below the top nipple but you can then only undo the nut to a certain amount until you cant then grip it anymore.
I have tried getting a set of grips in the shock underneath to hold it whilst i undo the top nut but im worried about damaging the shock.
I ended up grinding off the top suspension cup so i could drop it thru and out the bottom then get the whole lot on the bench to strip (luckily i had spare suspension cups!) but i dont want to put it all back again to possibly not be able to strip it off again in the future any ideas anyone??
