Have tried the search facility and cant quite find what I need so....

I have a 97 Cerbera with 18" spiders and need to replace the rear tyres, currently they are 255/35/18 and I wondered if I could get away with 265/35/18. Anyone know please?

Going wider with the rear tyres shouldn't be a major issue.

It's going wider with the front ones that causes the problems.

Too many variables, tyre to tyre (some makes come up wider than others) and also car to car as lots of variation in the way the body sits and no 2 are the same in reality - another variable to throw in will be if you have Spider "Fronts" all round or Front and Rears, the rears have a different offset and sit out toward the edge of the car more (hence people using fronts all round) but this will exacerbate rubbing on the wheel arch and can often happen even with 255's.

I've run 265/30/19's and 235/35/19's on mine.

These were on 8.5" fronts at 45mm offset and 9.5" rears on 35mm offset.

Fronts required movement of the inner wheel arch near the indicator inspection hatch on the drivers side and skimming of the rear nearside arch.

Rears fitted fine on the nearside but needed the outer edge skimming back on the offisde.

I run my car fairly low which may not help with the rears but with the fronts if it were higher it would have had problems with touching the bottom of the wheel arches on both sides.

I have fitted 255/35-18 Toyo 888 on my spiders. The previous tyres were Federal RSR 265/35-18 and before that Pirelli P Zero 265/35-18, and Before that 2x sets of 255/35-18 P Zero CORSA's, the trackday rubber is wider on the tread area thanks to squarer shoulders, so roadie type rubber is 265 & tracky type stuff 255.

Not wishing to be argumentative here however it is the rear wheels that need spider fronts ie same rims compared to tuscans which have as daft as it sounds rears on the rear and fronts on the front. It is not the rim that is different but the standoff from the hub. If you have rears on the rear you will get rubbing in the arch when cornering. I had this problem when i bought mine. changed to alround fronts and everything was ok. So i am deducing from this that if you go even wider with the tyres then the same could happen here.
Just my opinion of course.

just to add - I've recently fitted the new F1 asymetrics all round, rear 255 - fronts 225/40/18 the fronts have rubbed and split the arch after going down a hole in london whilst turning. The previous rubber same size cleared the arches fine... so it does depend on the make.

Was that yours at Warren's place 2 weeks ago (blue 4.5 with modded bonnet). I was considering the goodyears for mine in the near future.I know they don't last too long but would be interested to hear how they compare to Toyos. Would like to hear your opinion of them, wet v dry performance etc..

As for the OP, I have no good knowledge on the subject but have read that, in general, wider rubber does not mean better grip due to the offset of the wheel unless it's changed. Good luck in researching the subject. If people don't try then we don't go forward. I'm always willing for someone else to go first - That's how brave I am.
Did I mention, I don't know what I'm talking about.

Seems like a reasonable thread to ask, but, does anyone know which makes are that wee bit narrower for the same width, if that makes sense. My offside rear rubs and its a bridgestone 225 35 18.

Just had 265/35/18 and 235/40/18's fitted to my refurbed RL18's so we'll see how they fit on mine soon.

Tyres are Vredestein Sessantas.

yes it was mine up there, had a few more issues all sorted now. Goodyears have only just been bed in to be honest, and for once i'm giving them a chance. I tend to give tires abuse; we'll see how long these last; as for grip thus far: i had falkens on the rear. they are very gripy, much more confidence in the car (whether this is a good thing) hehe .

wet they're great, and had one drift the other day, and felt pretty good for a about 2-3 secs and didn't snap back.

so far top marks!
