Car died and wont start. (Saab 900NG)

I was driving my 1998 Saab 900 down a dual carriageway at night and at 70ish it just cut out, no noises or anything like that it just died, the lights were still on fairly bright.

Could not bump start it back on and when it stopped there was a smell pretty much like that of sparklers at halloween coming mostly from roughly where the distributor is.

Now the car wont start, the starter just clicks once.

Im not too sure about cars with distributors but surely if it was teh problem the starter would turn but it just would not fire?

A faulty earth somewhere could cause it?

Battery would seem to be fine as the electrics all work and the lights are fairly bright so I dont see jump starting it working.

As for the altenator, if it failed surely that wouldnt stop it from starting?

Im sure its an earth but maybe im wrong?
