Ok, heres the problem. From either a 2.9 Cologne or 3.0 Essex V6, I want to end up with a 5 speed manual, putting out over 300bhp, and loadsa torque.

To be used in a 25cwt kitcar.

So, Essex, carbed, blow through or not, standard carb or something different, procharged, turbod, supercharged or a hybrid STS from the USA ?

Same question for the 2.9, but using injection rather than carb..........

Many options I guess.

Any ideas from anyone knowledgeable.

Nice capri in the latest copy of classic ford (bright green and black, its on the cover) has a Cosworth 2.9i cologne with about 270 bhp, might be worth having a look at to get some ideas.

Dont forget ford mustangs came with cologne based V6s (still do) so maybe look at some of the american ideas for power gains or maybe using a bigger displacement engine, otherwise 300bhp from a 3.0 or the 2.8i is big money.

Either would be easy to achieve, if your budget allows

Iain Daniels Classic Car Engineering in Appleby Magna have been campaigning a supercharged Essex Scimitar GTE in sprints and hillclimbing for about 10 years, running 330hp, very quick and reliable and thats still on a carb! there are plans to get it out of the dark ages and onto ecu/injection end of this season, target 400hp i believe. Give 'Danny' a bell, he'll buidl you a motor/sell you the correct bits im sure.

Sorry to hijack the thread......

In mind that the big end journals are relatively narrow. What is considered a safe power / torque output. I'm running just over 260Bhp and just over 270Lb/Ft torque, and was advised (by someone who I doubt) not to go over these outputs, or it will be new big end shells every 1-2K miles.

Any thoughts?

HENSEN, to get my engine (2.8 Cologne) to this output cost a fair amount of money, it has fantastic torque throughout so great to drive. Wouldn't a more modern engine be a cheaper long term option.

Regards,

Chris.

How narrow ?

Subaru journals are very narrow, and can withstand silly power.

Ive also seen a Mitsi 2.5 V6 turbo stripped...and you would be amazed at how feeble their bearings, and even more so their rods are. They are the thinnest rods Ive ever seen.

I would have to dig an old shell out to measure, but from memory there in the region of 15mm wide.

I've turbocharged a number of 24v cosworths including one racer. Internally there aren't any issues, the shells were fine when inspected after a seasons racing. These engines are very understressed so boost doesn't cause them any issues.

Thats plenty.

Build a decent engine, use good oil, have it well tuned and it will be fine. 300bhp+ from a 2.9 engine is not difficult to achieve.

The video's are cool. A customer of mine is fitting a pair of custom vvt's onto his 24v and aiming for 600-700 hp. There's been a lot of work on his engine. He's also friendly with Turbotechnics and hopes to have a dyno shootout with Mr Kershaw once his engine is finished. Geoffs TT Minker also makes big power so it'll be an interesting comparison.

^You'll need low compression pistons and appx 16 psi for that.

You have to get them custom made or buy a short motor with them already included.

As Nike says, there are plenty of places who wil make you custom pistons, and they arent overly expensive.

There is also a company who offers a 4.0 stroker kit for those engines. Although more torque isnt necessarily what you want in a lightweight kit car.
