Doing the Stelvio.........
Discussion
OK so following on from my thread a while back
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
We've booked the ferries, booked the first couple of stops whcih at the moment is looking like:
Rotterdam - Nurburgring - Heidelburg
What I'm wanting to do is find a good next stop to set up getting over the Stelvio so wondering where the good place to stay the night before would be?
We will be hitting the area the first week in June so I'm aware we might be risking it a bit in terms of snow! Does anyone know if theres a site that tells you if the pass is open or not? I guess plan B would be the nearest tunnel?
Thanks in advance for any tips. BTW once on the south side we're heading for Lake Como. Any tips on some sensibly priced accomodation on the south end of the Lake would be appreciated

we did this last June. We stayed the night before at the excellent Paxmontana Hotel in Fleuli Ranft, Switzerland. After breakfast we went up the Grimselpass, then the Olenfpass(?) en route to Davos. Then the awesome Davos to Stelvio route, absolutely amazing. We hit the Stelvio about 6pm. Then we stayed in a Hotel in Tirano, which is about 25 miles south of the Stelvio Pass. One of the best days driving I have ever had.
We're there in July staying at http://www.santanton.com/
it's right at the start of the Stelvio and about €90 per head half board

Did the same last Sept. Stayed in Hotel Bazzoni in Tremezzo, Lake Como. It was good for the price.

I have a clip of the Stelvio Pass from the 996 GT2 that I can post later. Climbing from the North side; even though the scenery is spectacular, driving is not so much because it's too slow most of the times and the surface is not too good. Going down on the South Side (which is the side they've climbed from on the Top Gear show I believe) was fantastic.
There were many other great passes that humbled the Nordschleife. My personal favourite is Col de Turini up Monaco.
Here is a clip of that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLduMiSKO_4
I think I should make a separate thread of the trip and the clips. It was well planned and executed. Everyone got home itching for more. :-)
Here is the trailer of the movie we've made for the group (rated Petrol Head): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtYEEnKFrfE

didn't get to do the stelvio last year after my trip to le mans but did stay on the shores of lake como, depends on your budget, mine was tight so i camped just north of lecco in a place called mandello del lario. much nicer on this side of the lake than the como side...
if you have a bit more cash there was plenty of nice places to stay in lecco itself.
from there i drove round the costal road to bellagio (very tight with crazy italians) to como then north via campione d'italia to the gotthard, furka and grimsel passes to interlaken which was great fun! so good i'm doing it again this year!

If you wanted to stay really close to the pass, Hotel Eller in Solda is brilliant - I've stayed there several times and the food/accomodation is first class and very reasonably priced.

Gives you the option of a traffic free run in the early morning or evening when all the Italians will be concentrating on their food.

Davos would be easy, one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in - http://www.steigenberger.com/aw/Steigenberger_Belv...
