Hello,

The time has come to join up and I have decided on a 2500m (because I have lots of TR6 engine spares for one thing) or similar M 1600/3l perhaps even a vixen.

I saw one advertised a few weeks ago as an abandoned restoration which would have suited me but missed it as I was on holiday.

My request is really about what to look for when buying. I have read the books and read this forum which to be honest has been very helpful, but there is a lack of advertised cars or perhaps I am looking in the wrong place so any guidance would be helpful.

One other thing, I have been helping my friend with his 350i wedge and spares seem to be a bit on the short side, perhaps it is because I am more used to TR's and know where to buy the bits, as it were. So what is spare availability like for th M's and are there any recommeded suppliers?

Thanks

I placed a wanted add in the classifieds, didn't take long to find my 2500M.

Just go and get one!
They're easy cars to work on.
If you're experienced with TR6s, the 2500M will be straightforward for you.
Very few of the parts are difficult to obtain.
There are a number of specialists who will help you keep your classic running.
From what I've been reading here, Adrian Venn and Steve Reid will be your best resource.
You might want to ask them if they know of any good cars for sale and/or pay them to do an inspection for you.
If you'll be searching on your own, look for a car with solid outriggers/outlookers.
Also, the frame tubes below the doors are prone to rot.
Obviously, do a compression check and look at the plugs.
Look for improperly spliced electrical connections and it may give you a rough idea of the previous owner's overall ability.
Good luck and have fun!
B.

The 2500M was built mainly for export to the US as the Essex engine wouldn't pass the emission controls. The engine is US spec TR250 producing approximately 120 BHP. Having owned one back in the late 70's, I found it to be very smooth but lacking in power - a 1600M was as lively. In 1975 I chose a 2500M for exactly the same reasons you give and drove it for some 5 years.

This has been very helpful to me, I now think i will consider a 3000 or 1600 might although as i said my shed has quite a few nice engine bits so I will keep an eye out for one. I have just bought another tvr book so in for some enjoyable weekend reading.

Hi Tom,
I have owned a 77 RHD 2500M with some little modification like 2xHS6, fast road cam, 6 into 2 sport exhaust, higher compression etc around 120-130 bhp compared to the original 106bhp, very nice to drive and what a beautiful exhaust note, but perhaps could be better with an overdrive.
now I run a 1600M with a modified crossflow and 2 webers, high lift cam, 5 speed etc, the car is lighter( I could confirm with the french MOT !! but around 300 lb I am sure) and fast for a small engined TVR!!a pleasure also to drive, good sound with the stainless steel exhaust but it is not a 6 cylinder!!!
not easy to choose one and I haven't tried yet a 3000M or a turbo!!
a vixen is also a good choice, like this one http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C88013/ but perhaps already sold!!

I drove that car (ex Chris Meek) back in 1998 with aview to buying it from it's then owner, it needed a lot of work then, and judging by the pictures a lot has been tidied up, the engine then really needed some revs to get it going, and even then it seemed so slow compared with my modified Taimar.

A piece of TVR History though

Chris

I sold my 'last' TVR in 2002, I understand that it was sadly written off by it's new owner a few months later, though several parts have survived and are known to be on other cars!

Putting out around 200bhp, it was a quick car, and after being set up by Adrian was quite nimble too.

I keeping thinking of buying another, but at present a old house and young children consume my spare money!!

about 5 years ago they had a Griffith 200 for £16k... Dont know if anyone remembers? Dark green with Cragar wheels, had a major rebuild at David Geralds about 15 years ago. I wasn't in a position to buy it at the time but soo wish I had!!
