Brighton - anyone live there?
Discussion
Preston Park is close enough to the station - alright
Withdean is more residental
Hove's nice enough
Seafront great - but expect to decrud your car of seaspray every day in winter
Avoid Whitehawk and Hollingdean
Avoid places with parking permits. Brighton traffic wardens are lacking in even the most basic of faculties

Seconded!Maybe also look at Seven Dials - it's just above the main bit of town and the main railway station although parking can be an issue (although that applies to most of Brighton...). Whitehawk isn't the nicest of areas as mentioned above. I've been in Kemptown for about 7 years now and love it - it's far enough away from town to be quiet but near enough to walk in when I need to.

As others have said:
Consider: Preston Park, Hove, Seven Dials, Montpelier, Withdean (although a bit further from the sea and generally expensive)
Avoid: Whitehawk, Moulsecoombe, Bevendean
Do you need to be in Brighton itself? There are some nice places along the coast like Rottingdean, Saltdean and Shoreham which are easily accessible into Brighton, but have noticably cheaper property and are close to the sea.

Ideally, yes, as I need to be able to get to the Station easily. What's the traffic like on weekdays? I know it's horrendous at weekends...Consider: Preston Park, Hove, Seven Dials, Montpelier, Withdean (although a bit further from the sea and generally expensive)

Not as bad as weekends, but still pretty bad. Where are you commuting to?So Hove and Westwards is a possibilty. Also a bit easier on traffic and no A23 (south of the A27) to contend with. That really is horrid.
Parking outside your house/flat is terrible anywhere central and buying somewhere with a garage/drive in the central area will either be very expensive or impossible to find..... or both!
If you move out from the centre - beyond the Victorian/Edwardian houses you could then get a drive and garage (eg Westdene, Patcham) but you're then looking at a drive or long walk, 20-30 mins, to Preston Park station. There is on street parking near there without permits. Woodingdean is also good for parking, but a long way from the station.
There are flats on London Road/ A23 before you get to Preston Park that have garages and are not too far to walk to P Park Station.
It's a case of balancing the need for parking with the need for being near the station and town centre; it's unlikely that you'll suceed with both. We live in Patcham (northern edge of town, near the A23 A27 and hence have a decent sized garden, a drive and a garage for about the same price you'd pay for a victorian terrace with no drive/garage and a tiny garden near to the town centre. Pay your money and take your choice.
You won't be able to get much more than 3 miles from the sea wherever you live!
Property prices broadly speaking get higher as you get closer to the stations or town centre (I suppose that's obvious!). Brighton's probably the most expensive of the Sussex towns as it has the quickest train line to London and has much more life to it than Eastbourne or Worthing (aka God's waiting room), but if you're moving from London you might think it's cheap.
Don't be put off by comments about everyone being gay (unless you are in which case you won't be put off anyway
). There are some pubs in Kemptown and the town centre that are probably worth avoiding but apart from that the high-compared-to-other-places percentage of gays doesn't cause any problem, apart from the traffic jams when it's Pride procession, but it's only 1 day a year and is easy enough to avoid if you are driving somewhere.

As this is PH I'm assuming parking is important?

Parking spots are a premium. At some of the nicer areas near the station (Seven Dials for example) there can be a year's wait for a permit & not many houses come with driveways. Saying that, I have spotted a very nice 3 bed in the North Laine area (trendy, independent shops, bohemian) with 18ft garage & 3 bedrooms for £385k, which is about as 'reasonable' as it gets! It's also less than 5 mins from the train station.
Hove is a good alternative, more residential, good commuter links from the station & easier to park plus more likelihood of properties with off road spaces.
Other areas to consider:
Fiveways - very nice, residential, free on street parking everywhere & close to the London Rd station (can get to Victoria from there, it's one stop along from the main Brighton station). About 25 min walk into town, maybe 35 mins to the sea but very well served by buses or easy enough to drive in.
Lewes Rd/Hanover - closer into town but still no permit parking, much more studenty therefore cheap. Not as pretty as much of Brighton but convenient for train stations (15 min walk to Brighton) as well as road links out to A27 & A23.
I guess it all depends what you're looking for, what you want to spend & what the 'must haves' are

As an aside, I moved here from London 8 years ago & love the quality of life I have and the city itself.
Hi All,
Thank you for your replies, this is brilliant.
Train and parking are two big factors, the commute is a given, so either being easy to walk to, or drive to and park (does the station have a decent car park?).
Ideally, I'd want the journey to be 1 hour or under to Victoria which I know Brighton is (or thereabouts), as I want to get home at a reasonable hour.
I'm asking on here as Estate agents will just feed you a load of b
ks, so I'd like to be fairly informed before going and speaking to them.
I'll post up some links to houses which I think fit the bill and see what you all think...

Another vote for Preston Park, it's convenient for the A23, and the station is on the main line to Victoria - although not all the trains stop there.
I walk in to town fairly often from there and it's not too far (seems much further walking back early on a sunday morning though!), and if you don't fancy walking then the buses in brighton are pretty good.
Having said that, all of the places mentioned already are nice.
