North Yorkshire
Discussion
Wow... Just been up to York for my periodic trip to the inlaws and driving around there is incredible. It's not that the roads are spectacular, although some are very good, it's that you can drive out in the middle of the day on a bank holiday on a reasonably significant local A-road and still find hardly anyone about.
If you do find someone else, even if they're a little old lady in a Hyundai, you can guarantee they'll be doing 60mph on a NSL stretch. What's more should you wish to go a tiny bit quicker than that nobody objects - they don't stamp on the accelerator or 'wander' across the road as you contemplate going past in the way that people around London do.
Maybe I've just been jaded by living in the South East for too long, but it wasn't always the case. However, I think Yorkshire even trumps my native Devon, because, for some reason, they seem to have fitted long, wide straights at regular intervals purely so you can get past any dawdlers (should they exist) before the next set of bends. Highly recommended.

Don't tell everyone in London though
And if you think you've got problems... I originally come from the area that every single on of those 'move to the country to make a quick buck on a house by pricing the locals out of the market' programs seems to feature!

Well I started in the Howardian Hills and headed upwards. From previous experience the main roads over the Moors (Hole of Horcum etc) are a predictable exception (although even they're nothing like as bad as you'd expect from such a touristy location) but the surrounding areas are great. It's one advantage to visiting the inlaws!
You clearly didn't make it over to Scarborough then on your outing.
Not only have we had fog for the last three days (so far) but we also have a new Park n Ride scheme with loads of traffic lights. The parks are empty, as are the buses, and the sea front is a giant queue - reputed to run from Scarborough to Filey at one point over the weekend (7 miles).
Policies that apply to cities have been applied to a coastal town - and it doesn't work - especially the lights. Politicians at play again !!
Your still welcome though - icecream from Harbour Bar - arrive early to get your car park down on the front though.
And watch for the ANPR van - its been busy in both the Malton and Staxton areas over the weekend - with some new BMW estates attached, rather than the usual T5's. Do you think plod is on PH and new about the Breakfast meet ? Pity the idiot who had his £40k caravanette loaded away with the big 'No Insurance' sticker on the back.

Actually one day - think it was Saturday - we decided to investigate Filey for some reason. It turned out to be a very brief stay, followed by a trip back. It was a bit damp in the afternoon but visibility was fine and we had great fun taking the back roads through Hunmanby and the Luttons over to Haxby.ClassicMercs said:

Theres also an unmarked white Citroen van, YJ07HKJ I think, speed trap. The latest addition to the fleet is a fully marked up rapid response Audi A4 3.0 Tdi Quattro.Goes like stink!!! Not sure - certainly the pace of life and the pace of driving gets slower and slower the further from London
I am.
Drive 90 mph on the M25 and I have folks queueing
up to get past, drive 60 mph in most of North Yorkshire
(A1 particularly) and the locals seem to regard this as
some sort of terminal velocity at which *no* *one* is allowed
to overtake.
Normally, I hate driving across North Yorkshire - the hat wearing
yokels who drive in the right most lane at 60 mph for forty miles
and *never* pull in and get the hump when some berk in a BMW
flashes them to pull over really get my goat.
Add to that, it used to be two lanes only north of Doncaster which
meant I'd have to go double rations on the stress tablets
before attempting a crossing of the county.
The only slight ray of hope is that the A1 is being
upgraded to three lanes each way as far north as Barton,
leading to the possibility that the hat wearers might
*just* restrict themselves to lanes 1 and 2.
Tip for the top: drive left and let faster traffic pass.
You do not own lane 3. The berk who is flashing you has
been at it for hours, has hours to go, and just wants
you to wake up and follow the highway code.
Us local yokels try to avoid the A1 if possible, it's full of self important southern twunts racing up to your arse in their BMWs at warp, 9 flashing their lights and trying to barge their way past instead of taking it easy on a road which seems to have lethal crashes on it several times a week. You don't need to see many of those on your local road before it makes you take it a bit easier.
The fundamental problem on the A1 through North Yorks is poor lane discipline on the 2-lane sections. When I was at Uni down in Sheffield I gave up travelling the A1 during the day because it was just too annoying seeing queues of people dithering around in the outside lane because there was an HGV a mile down the road - it's much less stressful at 10pm!!! The local plod there are well aware that the main cause of accidents is people driving too close to each other and tend to enforce accordingly.
I definitely agree with others who have said that the yokels there tend to either do a good speed on the S/C roads or go out of their way to let you pass if you seem to want to go quicker. Still happens with most locals here in Cumbria as well, the problem round here being all the tourists who get upset when the locals want to do more than 37mph and spoil their tranquil holiday drive.

Have to say I've always found quite the opposite on rural roads. The visiting Londoners don't have a clue, but the locals all make decent progress.
I realise I'm a tourist in this instance too, but I speak from years of bitter experience in the Westcountry dealing with holiday makers and second-home owners who don't understand the concept of doing 60mph (plus ) on suitable NSL roads or indeed going suitably slowly and reversing when necessary on narrower lanes.
It does work both ways though. Even after a few years up here I still can't park to save my life...
