when i rev the engine the revs stay high for a while and it idels at higher revs,ive checked the throttel linkage etc all seems fine, when i unplug the idel control valve(i think thats what it is ,located on front side of injector manifold)the revs drop and its a bit more responsive. could this be my problem

It usually just needs cleaning inside (V6 2.9 engine models).

It could be - however disconnecting the ISCV actually puts the ECU into a limp home mode - as above says remove it - take it apart and clean out with carb cleaner and put a new gasket on when refitting which may solve your problem.
