Started commuting today...

All I can say is that it's sooo much better than being stuck in a car in traffic. It may not be as fun as my motorbike but is in a different way - and less likely to result in speeding fines
Few weeks back, I had considered the following bikes: Giant Escape R2 and Giant Bowery Mashup. Didn't go for either and went for a Trek Soho S.
It's in a matt olive green, would have preferred black but the shop didn't have one in stock so they knocked of £30 off the £400 price which didn't seem bad.
First thoughts are pretty good bike for the money, SS is pretty smooth and as my 12 mile commute each way has little climbs it performed brilliantly. Didn't feel it needed gears (maybe downhill) but as I'm using this to replace my morning cardio sessions in the gym, riding with a SS will help build my fitness/stamina.
Might even try running it fixed in a month's time to see how it compares with freewheel.
Only slight downside is that I'm constantly hungry, only just eaten 3 times so far since coming into work this morning
