Unplayable lag on PS3, How can I improve my connection?

Recently, my PS3 lag situation has got UNPLAYABLE in certain situations. I mostly play COD4, which is probably one of the worst games to play using a laggy connection. Multiple times I have loaded a full clip into someone, or at least where it seems they are on the screen, and then I get killed. On the killcam I was shooting in the wrong direction entirely!?
I also used the same connection as Norbury (AOL/BT broadband?) only mine is wireless. However, I checked my signal strength and it is 100%.
Any ideas or tips on how to improve my connection?
It can't involve changing my service provider, or anything over 20 quid...

Wireless is full of pitfalls, from interference to having a nearby connection using the same / overlapping frequency, and not always broadcasting the station name.
As everyone else has said use a cable there are many reasons this is better, faster, less contended, less error prone.
You could have 100% signal, it only needs to be bad for a fraction of a second to cause sudden lag. Its not quite the same but I am sure you have driven a radio controlled model car, how many black spots and weak spots and general randomness did you find with that?
Move to a cable, if nothing else it will help isolate where the problem lies, wifi is great for browsing the web from the sofa when page loads are not life or death but not for playing games when it gets you killed.

Cable connection to router, plug router to master socket using a shielded cable.
Replace Master socket with pre-filtered master socket.
I did these changes and my speed went from 2.5MB at the router to 6.5MB
I was getting a hell of alot of interference using dodgy filters and extensions.
It was a belkin shielded modem cable I believe.

Joining partys is more to do with NAT, this can also affect chat with some people, you may have a type 3 NAT (strict), if you connect to a router you want type 2 NAT. type 1 is a direct connection (straight to modem, no router)Hopefully won't have any problems with joining PH party's etc now
You can check this on the PS3 under network settings I believe.

Select your router, then Playstation network, and follow the instructions on how to open up the correct ports.
