Hi again Guys,
I`m still having reliability problems with my 1985 (C) 998 mini,Bloody condensors are now crap..I have tried various types from various motorfactors all with the same results...Within around 300 (Sometimes less)The condensor starts to fail untill the car wont run....I have even had bad ones straight from the box....Am i unlucky or are some of you guys having the same problem....????.
I have checked and changed just about everything,Coil resistance=3 ohms...Plug leads .New points,Earth lead in distributor and chassis earth...And,It all comed back to the condensor.....getting sick now...Its turned the car from Ultra reliable to the toss of a coin reliability = Not Good....
Any ideas guys...????
Cheers....Kev.

Fit an Aldon Ignitor or Lumenition Magnetronic ignition. A tad more expensive than a few condensers but they transform the car.

If you are going through condensers at that rate something else must be wrong, it would seem infeasible to have that many duff ones in a row.

High voltages kills these, and primary voltage is directly related to secondary voltage. If the plugs, HT leads, distributor cap and rotor arm are all know good/new parts, than the finger of suspicion has to point to the coil.

Personally I'd echo Mike's advice regarding the electronic ignition, it really does make a noticeable difference to starting and general running. However, those little modules are not indestructible themselves, so it would be a good idea to check the coil out before going down that path.

At the risk of sounding like a total novice - what does the condenser do (or not in this case)?

the condensor stops the points burning away

if they are failing as often as they are then something is shorting out in your car., the coil or a shorting wire i guess

you can buy very cheap electronic ignition kits from landrover people - they are very popular with landy and robin owners, but dont seem to have been discovered by the mini scene yet.

ive had a couple (they are about 6 quid each!) and repalce the points, condensor and the std rotor arms.

seem to work ok

Don't suppose you sit for any length of time with the ignition on for any reason (ie radio) as this will burn them out.

Thanks Cone,No i dont sit with the ign on.....
Also,Thanks to all for the replies...I think i`ll get a new coil first,Although i did test this at 3 ohms..It could be problematic whilst running,I also noted a rather large flash across the points each time i fitted a new condensor...Which i thought very strange...(Pointing to a problem from the start)..
I`m taking your kind advice and contacting the guys for one of the electronic modules to replace the points and sunderies.

I`ll keep you guys informed of progress,Thanks to you all again....Kevo.

It also greatly increases the spark energy by allowing the magnetic field in the primary to collapse more quickly, since the primary current isn't sustained by the points arcing.
