How to remove 'kidney' grilles (E46)?

Can anyone advise how easy it is to remove the 'kidney' grilles on an E46 in such a way that they won't be damaged and will be easy to re-fit?

I had a very quick look but didn't have time to try anything earlier. So, any advice very welcome...

There will be i think 6 clips on each grill.

You will need to open the bonnet and access the clips from inside. (there are also clips to remove the crome surround, i didnt need to unclip those to remove it)

When i removed mine they just came out through there holes towards you not towards the engine.

I've just fitted a shadow grille, taking the old one off was very easy, 6 clips as said, but a couple of them were very brittle so be careful !
