Looking into joining one of the national gym providers. Has anyone recently had any success in getting them to bend over on the monthly fees?... "credit crunch" on and all that.

Would think they would be jumping over themselves - so any experiences would be welcome.

Cheers

Yes, we got a deal on ours, for myself & my good lady it should have been ~£70 PCM, (£40 for first membership, £30 for second if I remember). We're paying £35 for the pair of us with a breakout clause if we choose.

I know its not hugely enforcable without the breakout bit, but its less hassle if & when we decide to change.

im doing the same at the moment and am pitching so far :
to lose the signing on admin fee £35, drop from £59 to £50 pcm, first month free, two wipe down towels, 6 guest passes, sunbed course, 3 plate courses, 3 personal training sessions, 3 car washes and he buys the coffee when i come to sign on.
thats where i finished with him. he hasnt a got a clue what to do with me.

problem is its the best gym around and i WANT to join that one but have to act indifferent. i just like doing a deal.

They were very matter of fact about it too. You can but try of course.

yikes £60 per month!?

Guess I just take the free gym through work for granted then!

(mind you, at £60 per month, that would've cost me about £360 per session over the past 3-4 years!)paperbag

We pay £127 a month family membership, there was no negotiating, was a case of "Take it or leave it" from them.

are there any hotels with good gym facilities near you? they may be more willing to do a deal. when i lived in manchester i used the gym in the hotel on my street, it was something silly like £15/mth for local residents and was never overly busy.

I just wrote a long post, which has been eaten by the Pistonheads fairies it seems but basically:

1. Virgin/David Lloyd/Esporta gyms aren't worth it unless you're going minimum 3 times a week.

2. As suggested, try your local hotel. The gym there will probably be small but it will be cheap (I paid £5 for my first gym, £12 for the second) and there will probably be a lightly used pool and/or hot tub

3. Head down to your local leisure centre. I joined mine which has a large, well equipped gym. I negotiated the joining fee to zero and pay £25 a month with no 12 month contract.

Some big schools/colleges also have good gyms aswell.

The more you pay the better looking the women. This is the most important thing at the end of the day.

The Road for running, the floor for sit ups, the mountains for cycling, lifting of small children for weight training.

Free.
