all, the future mrs w has very kindly offered to buy me a watch as a wedding gift. I'd ideally like something with a leather/alligator strap, black or brown. Something simple. I have been looking at vintage rolex from the year a was born (72) at about £2200 but am open to suggestions?

Just look around this forum a bit and if you are after a watch from 1972 there are few makes to consider but JLC and Rolex would certainly be among them. Sit back and wait for the really knowledgable like Tertius for one who will give you a far more comprehensive answer than I can.

Then let us know what style you are looking for. For example a gold dress watch, divers watch, chronograph, etc. Then we'll give you plenty of ideas! Here's one for example which looks reasonable value:-

Lovely watch, but then I would say that - I'm wearing one!

If I was buying an expensive watch which was going to be my daily wearer, then I would be wanting something tough as well as beautiful and well made. For example, that's a cracking s/h IWC (in fact, I've been looking at it since it went up), but the thing that puts me off with expensive watches like this is their (maybe only apparent) lack of durability (e.g. lack of decent WR), and hence the need to be careful when your wearing them.

I'm relatively new to watches so I could be being naive here. I may also be being overly cautious. Next on my list are an 42mm PO and a SeaDweller, as they tick all the boxes for me (external beauty, internal beauty, and daily durability).

Just my beginner's thoughts. Best of luck in making your decision!

I'd say that after two years of not being off my wrist my IWC (as the one advertised) is still in very good order. Slight marking around the bezel and the bracelet marked by desk diving but the glass immaculate, and it hasn't led a simple life. It still keeps immaculate time too (well, a few seconds a week but well within COSC standards). No, I reckon it's tough enough to stand the test of time.

Omega Flightmaster. I'm wearing one at the moment, they're from the right year and around that price (I think I paid about £2350 for mine, fully restored and warranted by Omega) and are seventies-tastic in a good way:

That's my model 911; there's also a 910 which has a 24 hr indication at 9 o'clock instead of small seconds.

I was lucky to get a JLC Reverso in Rose Gold as a wedding pressie from the wife - half of one actually, I added the rest of the cash. She also got a JLC as well from me.

In fact - I'm wearing it as we speak smile

My IWC AT Chrono never leaves my wrist as I just can't find a decent cheaper alternative that I like for daily use. It is wearing incredibly well and still feels "special".

Some good suggestions so far, but it might not be a bad idea to try a few on where possible, as many watches look impressive in pictures but don't reproduce that when on your wrist, materials, weight, size etc all play a large part.

Jules.

You would have to know what you are doing, or get good advice, but my search would start with the holy trinity and end with them.

I have bought and sold examples of all three under 2K.

I have one of those. Very nice, dressy enough for black tie, discreet enough for daily use.
