Ok, I know that the new XK variants are advanced to the last generation. However, they were no slouch. Is it just me or do some of you feel that the last model looked nicer, more timeless in a E-Type way? I am still toying with the notion of buying a low mileage 2003-2006 XK.

If you're new to XK's in general and haven't driven a new generation XK at all, then I think you'd really like it especially if it is a convertible. If you do decide to go this route then all I can say is don't go in the new ones, because they are much better.

G wink

I understand; but better in what way/s exactly?

Compared to the old XK, the new one feels light, nimble with a fresh modern interior, far more fun to drive (they auto g'box and noise are fantastic), the normally aspirated is as quick as the old XKR. Looks fabulous, the older ones are looking ancient now. They'll be less troublesome than an older XK. need i go on. Better yet go try one then and you won't go for steel trust me...

Good points. There are bas model 07 XKs with under 20,000 miles going around here for $35,000. I suppose I should have a look.

got to agree with you about looking nicer, but then again i am biased, the new xk will handle better and probably have less probs, but i will stick with the one i have, cos i just lurve it to bits cloud9

It's not just you. I think that the previous model is much more appealing aesthetically - and, for me, it incorporates the quintessential Jaguar curves which are all but missing in the new models. One of the reasons that I love Jags is that I don't like straight lines on a car body, and the new models have suddenly acquired them, particularly at the rear end. These make them look too much like other cars, derivative of several American, Japanese and German designs. When I wash my XK, my mitt can run 360 degrees around the car without lifting, without adjusting for any sudden change of direction or surface. It feels like a woman's body: graceful, curvy yet taut and purposeful. The new shapes are much more masculine, more angular, less contiguous. Not what Jaguars should be imho.

Worse, the new models are much bulkier than the previous ones. My XK is low to the ground. The new XK is 50% higher and a lot less cat-like.

So if it's Jaguar tradition, fine art and sensuous styling that you want, definitely buy the earlier model. But having said that, the new models seem to have made a great leap forward in terms of engineering, horse power, driver functionality and other Germanic things. If those important things matter more to you than art and style, buy the new model.

I have to agree there, I prefere the steel body, but as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I see all of you guys' ppoints. It comes down to literally art and history vs. better engineering, etc. If that is more important, there are always BMWs. biggrin

The main reason I opted for the earlier model was that the boot is large and therefore I can use car for two week holidays with no luggage prtoblems. This would not be possible on new one.
I have no doubt that new car is a better drive but old model still good depending what you are coming from.I came from TVR Chimaera so it was still a more comfortable car .

Er..the new one is infinately superior in everyway!

It manages to keep all the jaguar qualities (supple ride, great handling, refinement, looks) but puts in them into a modern context.

Only areas for improvement (and already now completed as far as I can tell)

Steering needs sharpening and more weight and feel
interior needs more pzazz for the money and small details like very cheap looking seat adjusters need replacing with real qulaity items
some of the clips and finishings in the engine bay look cheap to me. I had a coolant leak from a union and lots of the clips holding engine covers etc are easily broken. Makes you feel less proud of the car then say a german engineered vehicle and sets alarm bells ringing for where else they have saved money

Its one car that really needs a sport setting so that you can do the GT thing but at the flick of a button get it to feel more like a 997 Porsche.. I understand this has all been sorted on the new 2010 cars.

i too find the boot very useful, the new XK/R has boot that really should be much larger considering how much larger the back end looks!

Ah, an XKR 4.2-S, very pretty - that just proves that the older car is still very much a looker, probably the nicer looking of the two, but technically the new one is miles ahead.
