Quick question... why do some of their engines look like the old-school motor:

And some a lot newer:

Is there anything better about the newer looking ones or the cars they're fitted into?

Secondly what are the everyday costs and reliability like with a standard car? Integrale-esque, Mercedes-esque or somewhere inbetween? Given the age is rust and wear/tear a problem?

The "old skool looking ones" are the 1st generation cars.
They use the YBT engine with a big Garrett T35 turbo. These were to comply with homologation for Group A.

The 2nd generation "small turbo" ones run the YBP engine and were available from late 1994.
The turbo is a T25, is much smaller so suffers far less from lag. Miles better for everyday driving but harder to tune.

The Weber-Marelli IAW P8 management system of the YBT cars was replaced by a Ford EEC IV unit which is much less versatile. The ignition system in the YBP cars had one coil per cylinder compared to the static ignition system found in the original version.

Bigger oil projectors were placed under the piston heads for cooling purposes and the new head design was applied.

The T25 turbocharger's output drops above 5500 RPM and modifications are much harder on the much more restrictive EEC IV unit. If you have big power in mind go for the YBT car. wink

The car could still be ordered with the original engine/turbo even while the newer type was available. That's why you'll see a mix of cars with different engines in different years.

The head colours on the YBT were as follows:

Red for versions that required 98RON fuel, green for those capable of running on unleaded and blue for those running on unleaded gas with a catalytic converter fitted.

Also on the newer cars (from 1994) the option to delete the rear wing was added which made the car a bit more "normal" looking.

What else did you want to know? hehe

Edited to add: You can clearly see the difference in size of the turbos on the two pictures. wink

Hell no, sorry!
Never considered one before, but just found myself browsing them curiously...
Any decision to get one would depend on being able to run it on somewhat of a budget, and it being everyday useable (but not used every day).
Sounds like if I were to get one I should consider the newer engine.
edit: forgot to add thanks for the info, just what was wanted.
