Another newbie looking for Monaro
Discussion
Hi all, just started looking for Monaro after finally getting rid of my car.
Saw one last night, black '05 CV8 26,000miles, bog standard, but wanted £14,000.
Left it for the moment. Looked nice but was surprised how rusty all the suspension and drivetrain parts were. It's the big boot model.
Needs new discs by the look of it too.
Anyway, is there a buyer's guide anywhere on here?
I know how to check the usual things, just wondered if there were any common faults I should look for, ie, aircon problems. Cheers, Keith.

Hi and welcome, I think that Total Vauxhall are soon to publish a buyers guide so it may well be worth waiting, alternatively just ask away.
£14.000 seems strong, unless its with a full warranty and new brakes cos they ain`t cheap.
14K is high. The original list price was £28,650 discounted by 2K in March 05, probably more by the time the car was sold.
Remember, although Australian made, the Monaro is a cheap USA domestic market style muscle car which sold over there for little over half what it was here. So it is not as well made as European rivals of similar performance or money.

sometimes you are a gem of wisdom other times you spout crap.Remember, although Australian made, the Monaro is a cheap USA domestic market style muscle car which sold over there for little over half what it was here. So it is not as well made as European rivals of similar performance or money.
The car is very well put together, it sold for a lot less in the states due to one reason and one reason alone: contracted purchase. GM USA agreed to buy 30,000 (from memory) which is considerably more than the 1,000 that Vauxhall signed up, that is why it was a lot cheaper over there.
The build quality, and i base this on owning some so called superior German cars, is on a par if not better. Reliability is greater than BMW, no rattles or creaks.

Having owned Audis for a lot of years I would say that the Monaro is about as well put together as an early 90s Audi, and better than mid 2000s Audi. One area where I think the Monaro *might* lose out is in the quality of materials spec - Audi use very pure plastics whereas Ford (fore xample) use plastics with olot of bulking agent in them, which is why the platicbits on them get brittle and snap after a few years.
Of course we love our cars and I love mine. That is why it is up on bricks at the moment having the wheels refurbished. But my brother's Mondeo of twice the age and mileage has perfect wheels still.
There are just times when we should remember the Monaro was designed for territories and markets which didn't include Britain.

Well I just bought a new Insignia which is designed for the home market and I`d say the Monaro`s build quality is better.
(But you gotta get em undersealed if the cars a keeper)

I have to agree. Just have a look at some of the "sold" Monaros in the PH Classifieds and you'll find better for thousands less (my old car for example!).
Sorry to hear you've sold up, the games biz needs a larger v8 presence. I'll go nuts if I see any more vtec cars at work.
