944 Headlights - Are they the same as VW Golf Mk2
Discussion
Yes.
It is a little trick that one - you can often get the VW parts cheaper than the same ones from Porsche.
Another little known fact is that VW Beetle (old style) lights fit a 911 up to 964 and vice versa. Although more people convert Beetles to 911 headlight glass than 911s to Beetle headlight glass.

That's because the 911 is just a Beetle coupe. You'd expect the parts to be interchangeable...

So are they brighter? I'm not happy with my hadlights at all: the lights on normal beam are not powerful enough to keep up with the car, slowing my progress.

I suppose having owned countless Mk2 Golf Gti's & a couple of 944s I should really know this!! however I have a feeling its Mk1 Golf rather than Mk2? but then the headlights could be the same for mk1 & 2.
I know it does involve a bit of faffing about on one side to make 'em fit tho. (see old 911 & P/W article as Chris Horton did it on his '44)

I think they are the same as a Mk1 with the exception that the VW light has a hole in it for the sidelight which the 944 does no use. The last time I changed these on a car must be 8 yrs ago so the memory is vague, but you have to swap over the plastic fittings from the Pork lamp frame to the Dub one, so if the mountings are damaged it may be easier to buy the pukka lamp.
I don't suppose the front side lights from the 944 lux were scrounged from a parts bin somewhere were they?
My drivers side light was smashed this morning when some
ing cretin chucked an apple (or some such) out of his window on the m4 going in the opposite direction to me.
Cheers,
Mark

My opinion is there is nothing wrong with the standard 944 lights if they are working properly and set at the correct alignment.
I seem to be alone in the world regarding these new ultra bright lights that manufacturers keep fitting. It's driving me mad
at this time of year when I can't enjoy driving as I am constantly dazzled by all these twinkling Xenons, HiD's and super duper replacement light bulbs
I'll go lie down nowdiver944 said:

I'm with you on this one, especially if they're badly adjusted and pointing up in the air. There have been a few times when I was driving at night and flashed an oncoming car because I thought he had his main beams on, only for him to flash back!
On the unlit country roads I mostly drive on, I can't see the road ahead half the time because I'm so dazzled by the oncoming lights.
