hi guys, can anybody point me in the right direction of a decent intake, ive been told that these filters are quite good due to the 'ram air' effect, question being how much are they? and do they require a mafless remap.

im thinking of getting it mapped at some point next month or maybe later. heard allot of good things a bout mark from rapidgb, how much does he charge?

cheers kyle

otrcai.com
Also have a look at www.chipmaster.com.au at their project cars the monaro and the ve.
They evaluate various intakes and gains etc. Mafless is the preferred otrcai method due to optimal intake placement and design.
for vxr8 Id recommend russo intake and for the old monaro there are many options. I used a PT style otrcai.
Main benefit is a straight shot into the throttle with a short intake track over the radiator.
I have logged average temps 6*C lower than the stock mess.

think the going rate for a remap is around 400 quid on its own and that will get you a setup using his rolling road but its really a better idea to wait until you are doing a couple of mods at one time to get best value for money.

If your car is stock or maybe has just an exhaust upgrade you might benefit from a simple upgrade to one of the HSV clubsport tunes. Can never remember which one it is - ringram can point me at the correct file again. I could upload that for you for the price of a licence for efilive from ringram - 70 quid or so last I checked, you'd basically be replacing my spare licence that would have to be assigned to your car to upload the file. And as I'm only about 25 miles away along the M8 you'd save a few quid in petrol as well.

Offers there if you want to try it, sure ringram could give you some idea of what benefits you might get with a stock car and fill you in on the exact cost of a licence. Then save some more pennies to get a couple of mods done at once and get a proper tune and rolling road session booked to set them up for maximum performance - not something I'd even consider offering to help with, might try it on my own car but not someone elses. The HSV tune is a safe and easy option that plenty of people have used as a start point and can be uploaded by a chimp with a computer and the interface.

ringram is a reseller for efilive software, which allows you to remap the ls series of engines. I bought it from him a couple of years ago and it came with licences that allow me to remap 2 cars, I've used 1 to muck about with my own car. If I want to do other cars for people I need to add licences so if I was to upload a tune to your car I wouldnt have a spare code left so if a mate asked me to upload something to theirs later I'd need to buy another licence from ringram - not sure exactly how much it is atm but it used to be around 70 quid, all I was saying was that if you wanted to try another map I could do it but I'd want you to pay for the cost of a licence.

The clubsport map I mentioned is available from holdencrazy.com as a free download for efilive, there are several which is why I'd check with ringram which one it was he recommended I try a couple of years ago, it can then be loaded into the ecu on your car to change the performance and characteristics. Check out efilive.com forums for more details on whats possible - if really interested speak to Richard about buying your own version of efilive - around 500 quid I think for the latest version. In theory we could upload the custom OS at same time as the changed map which would allow you to install a valet mode switch - it would allow you to limit speed/rpm a garage mechanic for example could drive your car using a simple on/off switch hidden somewhere either in the engine bay or inside the car. Did hear of someone who wired it to an unused function button on the stereo.

Kyle, if you want to have a free trial with Efilive, go to www.efilive.com and download the software for free on to your computer. You can then go to holdencrazy.com and download some tune files to have a look at with the software.

Downloadiung all that stuff is the easy bit. Trying to get your head around it something else.

Just to expand on what well fans has said. If you went to someone who tunes with efilive the first map is more expensive because they have to buy a license which is then registered to your VIN. Once purchased any further mods and subsequent re-maps are less the £75 license fee. Or you could do what I did and that is to buy your own system and licence. That means you can get the tuner to use your own kit to remap your car on their rolling road.

Just a word of warning. Drug pushers get their victims hooked by giving away the first fix!!! (LOL)

If you want a factory mafless tune you can look at the HSV GTS (Oz one) its possible to tune the monaro to 300kw with intake, exhaust mafless tune etc. See chipmaster.com.au at project monaro.
But you are better to use your own tune as a base and just disable the maf and tune it properly.
Of course when you start thats easier said than done, hence why I just threw in a 285kw HSV tune when I started. IMO just take the High Octane spark table and paste it into your own tune, you must run 98 octane from then on though as the timing is pretty sharp, even too sharp in places. Eventually you will get the hang of it and be able to pump out the same or more power than the pro's

So just to confirm I am not a complete dullard: You guys retune your engines (I know I am back to basics here) using the gizmo and your laptop! I will be seeking power upgrades at some point and my original thoughts were to simply bolt on a SC, however you guys seem to shining the light in another direction completly. Cams, home tunning etc, etc, against £7+ K SC! Think I will be picking your brains for further info when I am ready to spend ££££'s.

In my opinion, if you go SC with standard internals, dont bother about a cam. The right SC will push you to ~600FWHP, about as far as your std internals (pistons/rods) will allow and therefore you wont be able to realise any additional benefit in a cam on top.

If you wanna stick with NA with std internals, cam+headers etc is a good mod for sure, but it wont get you where the sc would.

If you wanna spend money on forged internals, then for sure SC+cam+anything else you fancy is an option, though you're sc may then run out of puff (unless you pick the right sc).

Only the brave and experienced should play with their maps, if you get it wildly wrong, I reckon it could get rather expensive! Maybe I'm not that brave or experienced in ignition/fuel maps so I'm happy to rely on someone who has a proven track record in it!

All good points. Though you are more likely to end up with a car that wont start than a bust engine NA. FI yes, a bad tune can go wrong fast.
I would not recommend you start to learn to tune on a FI setup unless you take your time and go very slow and understand everything first before messing around too much.

I believe I have had the highest NA LS1 on the forum at 386rwhp on vixpy's dyno, plus 360rwhp from my stock LS2 with just rockers (stock exhaust) so pretty good power is there NA. Plus 454rwhp with my latest NA engine, aiming to decimate everyone except Harry once its tuned up right.

Ultimately FI will take you higher, but ask Dave/Harry what he spent and Jez what he is spending. A good stout NA will get you very close with more reliability, though emissions could be a challenge if you get too carried away.

I think Roger has a emissions happy cam going into a vxr8 soon, Check out the dyno day results and the upcoming drags, I think you will find both paths give similar results. Ultimately more ££ will buy more bhp though.

yep and I aint no expert but for uploading a map that someone else has created, that others have tested and used - that doesnt need an experts touch. Yes if you get someone that really knows what they're doing and road testing/rolling road time they'll squeeze more out of it - and you'll pay them for their skills. All I was offering was to upload a different factory map that will change the car's characteristics but still be in safe operating ranges. If I was having a load of work done then I'd pay someone else to tune my car at same time because I'd want the most out of it in return for my investment. In this case though the guy has a stock car so why not try an alternative factory map and see if he prefers that? If he doesnt like it then its easy to put it back to the original because it would be backed up before uploading the new map. Happy enough to muck about a bit further with my own car map but wouldnt do it with someone elses.
