good on alonso for blasting the pathetic rule whereby now the tyres are two steps apart. it was bad enough making them choose non-optimal tyres before but at least they were still capable of being mildly suitable. as anyone who watched the free practise could see, these tyres are destroyed after a few laps with chunks flying off as they disintegrate, they are clearly unfit for purpose. and all to 'enhance' the show. when will the FIA understand that there are some things that just don't need fixing!

Agreed. I'm not a football fan but I've never heard anyone complain about nil-nil draws and thus the governing body feeling the need to change the rules to produce more goal scoring. Why do the FIA feel that constant overtaking is required to enhance the show? I like the fact that it's a long tactical game.
During 2nd practice one of the Ferraris had large strips of rubber flying off the front tyre. A bit even hit the driver on the helmet. Now ok it was a big understeer moment which is not kind to the tyre. But even so. Do that too often and the tyre will be down to the carcus... If they find they can only do 5 or 6 laps on that tyre it'll be a farce.
Agreed, this is absolutely bonkers. Select the optimal tyre and then take the harder and softer compounds either side of it.
All these artificial hurdles are stupid, most people just want to see the faster driver, in the fastest car, win.
The FIA were supposed to reduce lap times, but allowing the double deck diffusers means that the Brawn was quicker today than last year's qualy time in China.

flav i don't like but alonso's arguements are normally quite logical and sensible. at least he's one driver that has the guts to stand up and say what he thinks rather than having no opinion. we need more of it. if the drivers voice can't be heard it gets dangerous. they are the ones who are racing, not the FIA.
i think unfortunately for all the drum banging about safety the FIA does, it's going to take an accident for them to realise that they have gone too far with the show - and looking at the state of some of the tyres today, i think it's going to happen sooner rather than later.

Actually they did by adjusting the points scored for a win from 2 to 3 thus encouraging teams to go for a win instead of settling for a draw. However... I agree with Alfonzo...

k it up, at least do it properly. (just like Kimi did.)Actually I don't think that Kimi's little adventure on wets was that far away from what we will be seeing this weekend. Faster laptimes obviously, but the drop off will be pretty similar I would have thought.
I must admit, those tyres really do fall apart. I've never seen rubber flailing off the tyres like you see on the onboard cams. Then again, the onboard cams are not as good as in recent years. They seem to crumble like Oxo cubes!
Seems to be through alternating coners. Like the tyre overheats quickly under load as the outside tyre, then the surface crumbles as it scrubs as the unloaded inside tyre.
But everyone as the same disadvantage. Seems like Alonso's toys are being thrown from the pram, again...

Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Racing at any level, let alone F1 is dangerous on the wrong tyres. Drivers/teams will be pushing to get as many laps as poss out of the soft tyres, making them prone to punctures and delamination.
I would love to put the nutters who dreamt this up in one of those 2 seater F1 cars shod with those tyres and see if they still thought it was a good idea then.

I guess the solution is to qualify really light and do a 7-8 lap sprint at the start trying to get a 30 second lead to get you in and out of the pits at the front of the pack?
