engine and air filter

I have a question for the gurus. I understand that air filters are common on industrial made cars that are about to used in any corner in this world in all kind of different conditions. My car however will never drive in mud or dust hence the question if a typical air filter is needed at all ?
What about having a filter that is avoiding larger particles to enter the throttle like seen on vintage engines ?

Hi Uwe

Always fit an air filter! It is not worth the risk not too! I have seen plenty of damaged engines caused by people removing filters and foreign objects getting into the engine. Some race cars run without them but the engines are going to be rebuilt on a regular basis.
