Hey guys,

I've been in AD for a while now but now we've finally decided to get a maid. The thing is we need her quite soon and having spoken to the Phils embassy this could easily take up to 6 weeks.

A friend has suggested the following, get her a tourist visa to get in to the country asap, apply for her residency visa and once finalised get her to exit and re-enter via Kish or Oman. This procedure apparently avoid all the reqmts that the Phil govt. imposes such as a domestic maids course for 2 weeks!

Is this correct? any other suggestions?

Cheers
Deep

My housemaid is heading back to the Philippines to get married so we are currently in the process of finding a new one....

There are so many being laid off at the moment as families pack up and head home that you should be able to find one already here and with a transferable visa. If not then at least one already here on a visit visa looking for a job.

Check the notice boards at your local supermarket.

And remember...

Philipino>Indian>SriLankan.

Have employed all 3 and there really is a marked difference in quality of work and attitude. But you pay accordingly.

You are looking at about 1600 dhs per month.

You have to provide visa (5k + per year), medical insurance (600 per year), accommodation and a flight home every 2 years (we do every year - as do most others).

All-in about 30K per year.

Is it not just a little bit weird having someone live in a small room off your garage?

Not knocking the idea of course, I keep telling my Mrs I'm going to line up a lithe young Thai thing by the time she gets here. I lived in Zimbabwe for a while as a kid and my parents had a house keeper and a gardener but they lived in their own little houses at the far reaches of our gardens and both went home most weekends.

Just find the idea of someone from outside the family so close all of the time a bit heavy going. Interested to hear how you get along with it.

cheers fellas,

the thing is I did look locally and the quality of domestic maids/nannies is quite poor for the ones that are available, all the good ones seem to get snapped up or transfer to people that knew the departing family. zWell, that was my experience and the one we've found is really good (based on chatting online and references)

Hitch, I am also feeling quite apprehensive as we've held off getting help, the thing is we're expecting our second baby in a month and we don't have the close friends and family network to fall back on.

If you can afford it, get one. You'll be doing them a favour and making your life so much more enjoyable. Will keep you posted once she arrives.

Our maid is really just a glorified cleaner.

My wife doesn't work so looks after the 2 kids; we don't want them brought up by a stranger. Having someone outside the family looking after the kids would be a little wierd - but having someone outside the family cleaning the house...not so much.
