Discussion
Heya,
I have a N reg mk4 1.6 8v polo and i am putting a 1.6 16v polo gti engine in it as i new someone who no longer wanted the engine so i took it of his hands.. I was just wondering do you know what are the biggest problems with this as i have heard the gearbox's always go, can the lupo gearbox go into mine? and any tips to help me as me and my boyfriend are fitting this ourselves and we are starting to relise its gonna be a long project, any useful info will be much appriciated..
thanks
Indy

I have the polo GTI with the 1.6 16V engine in it.... Am just looking at converting it to a 1.8T unit...
Basically... the gearboxes are a little on the weak side.... they tend to last between 40,000 and 80,000 miles before they start to make unpleasant noises..... keep it topped up with good oil and you should be ok... a rebuild will cost you around £400...
The desirable 6sp lupo box is not a direct fit onto the GTI engine as far as I am aware.....
Its a good engine... variable valve timing kicks in at 4,000RPM giving you a nice straight power pull...
If I was going to the effort of fitting that engine into the older polo I would ditch the VW intake manifold and fit individual bike throttle bodies and run it off an aftermarket ignition system such as Omex etc...
Good luck with the project! If you get stuck... drop me an email!
