I'm selling my Porsche 993 carrera S and fancy a change. I've always fancied a 308 and need all the help I can get. I've just started to do my home work and thought I'd start here. So I'd be gratfull of any advice or suggestions, what to look out for, what are the running costs, which year is best or what model, how much I should pay etc...

A ferrari 308 is a sunday car just to start the ball rolling..Hope you are under 6 foot to start of with as early ferraris were built for small fat ITALIANS not 6 footers,,, Service charges will also be a lot higher even if not used as early ferraris are trouble changing CAM belts & are very costly to replace,,
Rust is also a big concern on early ferraris all most falling apart (Wheel arches ,Lower doors, Lower wings, Sorry almost everywhere,,
Dont think im anti ferrari in anyway, Im a Porsche 996 TT owner But i also run a 360 Modena,, Different cars for different things, Porkie every day car if you wish, But i still wouldnt use a 360 every day,, But running cost still have to be payed,,Think hard before you jump ship....308 still one of the best looking cars ever made,, Get a speciallist to check a ferrari before letting go with your large amount of folded money... Hope you all the best GOLDIE

I`ve had my 308 GTB just over a year now and think they are great cars. I consider them to be cheap to run (I did a cam belt change and had money left from a £20 note) and great fun. Most of the running costs can also be set against the way they hold there value.
They are not very quick but the noise of my carbs just behind my right ear and the sports exhaust more than make up for it. They are a car that you have to work at driving fast but are very rewarding to drive when you get it just right.

On a nice warm summers morning down the coast road before the trafic starts , a 308 gtb is a very very nice place to be and £ for £ are some what of a bargin.

Gorgeous, beautiful, stunning, iconic cars! I'd love one too.

I've read the 328 is a bit more 'sorted' and still has 95% of the looks.

Research any car you are considering, carefully. If it's where your 'heart lies' then you have to go for it. They will not lose any value.

Of course... you will have to grow a huge 'tache and buy a Hawaiian shirt! ...bit it WILL get you laid! wink ...and that's a contractual *guarantee* in writing from Ferrari! wink Hahhahaa

Cambelts: as the other poster stated, if you do it yourself its a cheap job.
An independent will do the belts for £350/£400 - and this only has to be done every 3 years (or 4 or 5 years depending on who you talk to - See FerrariChat 308 section for endless debates on this subject. But I've always done 3 or 4 years)
Rust - yes they do rust. Best to get the lower sections inspected properly (I would suggest getting a bodyshop with experience of these cars to do this as opposed to a garage) before purchasing. A damp garage will be problematic.

I've had my car 11 years and I consider it extremely cheap to run and insure. Extremely reliable - the 308 has been a once a year service job...
Carbs & Sports Exhaust make it a joy to drive.

like the Coca-Cola bottle, a truly classic shape. "Original Ferrari V8" by Keith Bluemel is recommended reading.

I ran a 328 for 10 years & I loved it. I used it a lot for the first few years but it was not my main car.

I wouldn't consider a 308. The 328 is the better car. I don't know what the price differential is these days but whatever it is I'd say it's worth it. However, I know I wouldn't swap my 993 for a 328.

I've had a 993 for about 4 years now. It's my every day car & although there are plenty of flaws in its design it's a much better car than the 328, as you'd expect from a car that's 10 years newer.

If you were considering a 355 I'd say go for it, but they certainly cost more to run than a 993.

Cambelt change expensive? Did you have Stephen Hawking provide the labour then?

308s are cheap to look after. Cambelts are pennies.

The issue is rust as others have said...oh and non-use - the electrics are Aldi spec but not complicated if you are used to old MGs.

308 - toggle switches, 328 press button switches. 328 is a better car, no doubt, but those toggle switches do it for me every time.

I bought a resina 308 i think best buy they cost a little more but they are the one to have. Faster then a steel one. And just a few made so it will keep their value better.

Only drove it a few times and the car surprised me a bit because it was faster then i expected it to be. I do not drive it so much because i collect cars a bit and most of the time i live in Russia and here i drive a UAZ patriot. Is a Russian jeep they made into a suv.

But really the resina is the one to have. Just a few hundred made and i guess much less left. You have to pay more then a steel one but worth it.

Handling is very good.

(how do i post a picture)
