Hi chaps,

My bro in law has had his car overheat after blowing the rad. Long story short it seems that there is water in the oil. So I am thinking it’s a head gasket or head.

The car is an R plated E39 523i SE. We have a new rad fitted but he needs a reputable firm to replace the head gasket or complete head if needs be. We are also going to replace the water pump and thermostat as well.

He's located in Walthamstow E17 and I am based in Kingston KT1 so a company near either would be great. He's prepared to take the car to the right firm so travelling is not a problem. He just needs a reputable company to do the work and stand behind it.

Any help greatly appreciated… he has a little one on the way and so needs to get his car sorted asap.

Cheers…

What makes you think this?

Hi Renn

I have used M & S Autos in Hanworth for the last 13 years and my Dad has used them for 35+ years. They are not too far from you, very reasonable on cost and will be straight with you as to what needs doing. They specialise in BMW and Alfa. If you wanted to use them then drop me a PM and I wll provide the details.

Hi sorry for the late response not been on the net today...

The reason we are thinking its the head gasket is that is what the RAC man and another mechanic said when they looked at the car.

The car was overheating as the bottom of the rad was cracked. He had that replaced and then the water level was bubbling and going down. When I checked the dip stick I noticed the oil was very watery. No Mayo, under the filler cap or dip stick, but the car wasn't run very long.

Do you think there are other checks we should do to confirm its a head gasket? I'd appreciate any pointers. I really want to help my Bro in law out and hopefully prevent him doing stuff that doesn't need doing or getting done over.

hi mate,

Did you have or know anyone who have had a head gasket or cylinder head replaced by these chaps? I want to make sure I get a receipt and some sort of warranted work.

Cheers

To check for a head gasket or a cracked head, you can either hold an exhaust analyser over the radiator tank, or test the pH of the water which becomes acidic with disolved gasses, a leakdown test where a cylinder is pressurised and you look to see where it leaks to, or a compression test.
They can all all show different things, some problems won't appear on one test, but will on others, but the garage will know anyway.

Understood but I just need to find the most reputable place I can to do the work.
