Can anyone explain to me what the inlet/exhaust paths are, it being a W16 configuration? My son asked me to draw it on his etch-a-sketch (don't ask!) and it got me thinking about whether it is a crossflow, how the inlet charge is kept cool and the like. I'm sure someone knows....

However because its a the VW VR6 type of layout there are two banks of pistons per cylinder head. this means the inklet port for half the head runs along side the exhaust port of the other half.

Its a marketing exercise you wouldn't design an engine like this unless you had to.
A previous colleague of mine was gearbox development man on this project and said that within about 100miles from new the two middle spark plugs were melted, so most Veyrons are only running on 14 out 16 cylinders.
still 980 or 1080 Bhp its still pretty quick.....

Cheers Guys - I knew someone would have the answer.
350Matt, you've hit the nail on the head. I guessed it would be a crossflow (in this day and age!), but couldn't figure out the inlet/exhaust route. You're right - you wouldn't choose to run an inlet plenum (already heated through compression by the turbos) next to a red hot exhaust. No wonder the thing needs so many radiators/inter(charge?)coolers!
Can you imagine going to the local village garage and asking the mechanic to have a look at your engine - it's only running on 15!!!
Awesome pic by the way, although it might be a bit beyond my artistic abilities to reproduce wobble
