Need some advice,

The Merc is burning oil at the moment, when I start it up there is a small cloud of blue smoke, and when I accelerate hard there is a cloud of smoke for a few seconds. When driving along there isn't any visible smoke coming out the back, but if you are behind the car it smells smokey.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Probably inlet valve oil seals are disintegrating and need replacing. If you leave the car idle and then start it up, the oil would have gone down the valve spindles and sitting waiting to be drawn in and burnt on start up.Then it will clear after starting. The smell could be the suction draw of the piston pulling more down the valve especially if the car has done a high mileage and the guides are worn.

as justin said, the valve guids on 190's are bronze and do wear, you could pop some stem seals on as there an easy job,i take it it's a 190 sohc motor.
