Speeding - you have been warned!

The first 24 hour race of the year is now behind us. 92,000 came for the 24 hour bike race and as usual many problems everywhere. I watched one guy doing a burn and his tyre exploded so he was stuck for the wqeekend! However, the police were everywhere (including plenty of CRS - the riot police) and in today's paper it was noted that 733 speeding tickets were issued and 82 licences taken off people on the spot. I had a chat and they are now preparing for the GP bikes in May and rubbing their hands with glee thinking of the cars in June. It's up to you but I advise caution!

Was the errant behaviour as bad for the locals as it has been in previous years?

Well, unlike last year there are no reports as yet of calves being strangled with strands of barbed wire then barbequed for the "visitors" pleasure if that is what you mean, nor as yet do I have any info on how many bikes were stolen but judging from the state of the camp sites and the rubber marks on the Chemin aux Boeufs (where we sane people avoid on the Friday night of Le Mans week) it would seem par for the course.

I jest not. This year as I wended my way past the camping I saw the Peugeot burned out that a youngster had wound up, blown the motor and which had caught fire and burned out. The state of the camping sites are beyond explanation - a mass of rubbish, blown engines, pallets (the ACO stockpile pallets for their fires since it is after all April and besides which the bar stewards cut the trees down with their chain saws long back and burned them). Two commercial sized wheelie bins were full of japanes swords, chain saws, knuckle dusters, etc. since on arrival everyone is searched and checked for V5, insurance etc. The usual format is that 8 or 10 arrive with their bikes and a friend with the Transit full of beer and their camping gear, but, plus a Mobylette or whatever from the scrapyard which they then fire up and take bets on how long it will be before, at full revs, the damned thing explodes.

I am sure that we should recommend this event to the idiots who love to pour piss on everyone Friday night. They would be much more amused plus, if I am right, a few might get so battered they'd never come back to Le Mans.

Agreed.

I might stretch the odd speed restriction here and there, occasionally my foot might slip off the clutch a little swiftly and I will admit to being slightly amused at the thought of sending a K series to it's maker in a ball of noise and smoke but there is a time and place for everything.

Hi jinks, a few sociable beverages and a good laugh are the order of the day. Loutish behaviour is totally unacceptable however.

Didn't think it was as bad last as it was previous years. Maybe the rain in 2007 put many off in 2008. Never understand teh people that belt down there and then moan they get nicked. Its the one weekend of the year where you have to show more restraint whilst driving through France than any other. Went down to Le Mans last month to visit some friends and didn't see any police all the way there and back. Actually come to think of it there were a large number of unmarked cars on the M20 on the way down to the chunnel last year as well.
