Racing 'Travellers' Block Road (and get away with it)
Discussion
probably in the wrong forum. But it's got roads, cars, horses, racing, betting, plod and genuine proper PIKEYS behaving badly!
I just got confused.

Racing travellers block A127
12:50am Monday 20th April 2009
A MAN was arrested after police tried to stop travellers taking part in illegal horse racing down the A127.
Three horses and traps were seen racing along the eastbound carriageway of the A127 between Great Warley and West Horndon junctions shortly after 7am on Sunday morning.
About 20 vehicles followed the horses, several completely blocking the carriageways, hard shoulder, a cycle track and the pavement.
Inspector Stephen Pearce of Chigwell Road Policing Unit said that there had been an increase in this kind of incident and several races had been held along that stretch of road since the start of the year.
He said: "We believe the people involved have absolutely no regard for the safety of other road users."
A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of obstructing police, dangerous driving and having an offensive weapon and is being questioned by police.
Mr Pearce added: "This shows a blatant disregard for road safety and for anyone who wanted to travel along that stretch of road.
"We want to put a stop to this practice. We will take positive action against anyone who is involved. We urge the public to give us any information about the people who run these races. I hope people will quickly phone 999 if ever they see horses and traps and a convoy of vehicles preparing to hold races in future."
Anyone with information about the incident on Sunday should contact Chigwell Road Policing Unit on 01279 621866.

We know it's the pikeys. You know it's the pikeys. Put on your best brave shirts and ACTUALLY have the balls to go onto their sites and sort them out. We've had two horseboxes stolen from the yard this year and despite CCTV, the police won't go onto the Pikey Site to check the horseboxes that fit the description of missing trailers.

As for your horseboxes are you saying they are on the site? Which site? Whereabouts?
What are the indexes and where are they?
I have spend years going on sites alone and in teams.

There are three reasons the Police don't do much with pikeys;
1) You need a lot of brute force to get anywhere with them, because they're not afraid of causing some serious rioting
2) They are bang up to speed with ECHR legislation and will wriggle out of just about anything
3) They are very good at disappearing

1) Really? Never bothered me when dealing with them. In fact they rarely do kick up too much, they just act like they will
2) Bothered- never stopped me arresting them or putting the to court or my force having a dedicated team
3) Not that good.
The police actually do a lot with 'pikeys' as you call them, just you don't see it.

We need more like you then. Genral view is that our local (stay constantly in one place unless you're on the run) Traveller Community seem to do what they like when they like and how they like and the rest of us don't like it. Hence we pay taxes for people to sort it for us and a view is they don't appear to.
How many Travellers were arrested? How many will be prosecuted? Will there be an investigation in the betting ring surrounding the race? Will the carts and horses be confiscated?
Or will the BiB and government simply sit back collect taxes in speeding fines taken from along the new average speed cameras on the A127 - 50 effing MPH, that will help pay for their retirements in a few years?
There will no doubt be another race soon.

Perception V reality. Perhaps you should ask Essex Police what they do?
I know they do quite a bit on that sector of the community.

Look i am with the original poster, accept it plod you are one of the few that goes near the pikeys, most forces as far as the public can see are terrified of them and dont go near them, now go and beat someone to death whilst getting paid overtime at a protest.
Firstly I am not and most forces do and have gone onto sites, they just don't feel the need to ring you and tell you about it. As for your second point - well you are a very big man aren't you. Feeling all tommy 'uff now are we?

I think I have far more experience of what the police do or do not do with that community. You see one or two examples. I see cars being seized all the time, I see warrants being executed, I see operations and teams set up to target them, I've had fights with them, arrested them, visited sites daily.
I have liased with other forces on joint operations.
Don't read what I type then Dan. Nobody forces you. Don't however tell me not to relay my experience of the dealing with this community and to challenge people when they make claims that in reality from my experiences have no base.
I don't agree with much of what you say but I don't label it garbage. Its your experience, it is your perception. It does not mean it is correct.
I can understand the general point of view with regards to these typer of people. In my limited experience, they are all scum.
Thing is, when they are allowed to live the way they are, how can you police them. Nick them, they get bailed to appear.. oh, they've moved.
I was going to ask how they tax vehicles etc without an address....bit stupid of me really.

Police said no evidence, gave a crime ref number. End of. f

Took a group of said farmers with shotguns to convince the pikeys to give the gear that was left back.
If the police continue to do nothing, then vigilantes will be the only way.

Back in the day when I was learning to drive, I was heading down a wide, straight bypass road (much like a race track in fact
) when I happened across chaos! It was pikeys' pony and trap racing and quite literally doing anything possible to stop other road users getting through. This wasn't an early morning though, it was about 2pm on a Sunday afternoon down a major road!
There were Transit vans blocking sliproads, roundabouts and swerving around to block my progress to pony speed well back from the 'action.' They even sped through lay-bys where other road users were parked up to ensure no-one 'overtook' the race using that route.
We called the police of course, but it turned out nothing was done as shock horror the pikeys couldn't be traced! How they officially get away with it in this situation is beyond me. The quote from Snatch gives the best synopsis of my view on pikeys!

And yet only one person was arrested? Three horses and traps were seen racing along the eastbound carriageway of the A127 between Great Warley and West Horndon junctions shortly after 7am on Sunday morning.

If you were to replace the horses & traps with cars, be they saxos or TVR's one has to wonder how many arrests would have been made then???
Contrary to what Mr Annie has to say, in my past experience the police do little as there's little point as the buggers always seem to get bailed and then fall off the radar for a while. Scum the lot of them.
