At the risk of starting an argument, can someone tell me which road model is likely to be quickest on track? I kind of guess the new 996 GT3 RS is the obvious answer and I don't suppose anyone has any real world experience of this yet but are there any other serious contenders?

What do you mean by road model? Current road going production Porsche?

That'll be the Carrera GT.

Current real world production Porsche? Yes, I suppose the GT3-RS may just pip the GT2.

Classic or current real world road going Porsche? Maybe 9M's 400bhp 993RSR...

See the problem? (Fun working around it tho').

At a guess:

(1) Carrera GT
(2) GT2
(3) GT3RS
(4) GT3

I have not included the Turbo as its position would depend on the track ie a twisty track or lots of straights.

As long as it isn't Buster's, as he drives like the big jessie he is In my experience, 4WD doesn't always give you the big advantage on track that it does in, say, a rally car. Ok, you can get the power down better from the standing start, and when you hit the straights, but a well driven 2WD (of similar power and configuration) will generally be a bit quicker round the bends.

There are too many variables to say which car would be quickest. On a fast dry track, something with loads of power like the GT2 is going to win hands down. On a twisty track on a wet day, you'd probably find a well set up 944 Turbo would be hard to beat.

The 996tt I`ve seen on track seem pretty quick regardless of conditions. ABS 4WD and stability control help the driver use those 400+ bhp. I suspect that you would need to be a more skilled driver to be faster without the driver aids even in the more track orientated stuff.

You're all wrong. The Boxster S is much quicker. Especially when it's me or Don driving it. Better looking too.

Quite right. How many Turbos did I pass at Silverstone that day? Hmmmn. There was the time I did two in a row down the pit straight...and I have it on video to prove it!

N.B. Clearly they kindly let me past by pulling over after I had been in their rear-view mirrors for the tighter section before Woodcote - very polite driving. And on a dry day they'd have been a half-a-lap ahead by the end of the session...

Maybe they had seen the GT2 driver and realised they had nothing to prove?

Enough of this pub talk! Let's organise a Porsche race! I'm sure an MSA recognised club should be able to organise a sprint at a decent, challenging UK venue - say Brand Hatch GP circuit during Pistonfest 2004.

Then we'll find out who's the fastest!
