Drove through a village today with several people sat back from the road, under a tree, sheltering from the rain.

On the pavement was a portable 'slow down' sign, which presumably only flashed up as people approached over the 40 limit, at which point they looked as though they were writing down registration numbers.

I was marginally over 40 and the sign lit up. The B2 showed nothing, laser, or otherwise so what's it all about?

I think the signs work on radar, I have come across these before, if you drive safely over the limit, they send you a box of roses chocolates IIRC !

Basically they shout abuse and call you a wussy if the sign does not light up.

an auto one has appeared on my local route. OK its a bend on a hill with a junction..

but the amusing part is its solar..

so one week after installing it, its stopped working as rush hour is now in the dark..

I got it to light once, before it got too dark, but the joke is...I turn off at the junction anyway, so how could I be going too fast!!!!

There’s one near my house on a piece of NSL A-road. It seems to have a slight delay between sensing you and flashing up its slow down message

Rather counterproductive in terms of speed reduction, as it presents an irresistible challenge to discover the speed at which you don’t see it flash because you’ve already past it.

They occasionally have a good one as you come out of Windsor Great Park and into Windsor in a morning - it cheerfully tells you how fast you're going!

Some people might consider this an incentive and I have to admit wondering whether I could get it hooked up to the towbar on the Volvo and get it away and squirreled off in the garage for sometime when I fancy doing a few "top speed runs". :-D

They really are sad people waiting to die. It has never happened to me but if it did I would stop and ask them why? IIRC they have no right to take your number as it is against the data protection act unless they are employed by the state. One old dear up in court would stop this nonsense. Jealousy is a terible thing but I would guess if your are in a nice loud expensive car you will get caught, where as old joe who can't see properly, can't steer properly coz of arthritus, and can't brake properly because of the shit on his feet from the burst colostemy bag, will be okay because he is in his fifteen year old marina.

Gonna stick my neck out here and suggest that it's not unreasonable that the inhabitants of small villages take action to slow down the people driving through those villages? It's bad enough that the the Government won't build them bypasses, without having traffic roaring through at well over the limit.

The small village I live in was bypassed a few years ago, but then the Chief Constable of the county lives in it, too.

YOu might get a letter saying that you were spotted speeding through the village but it's unlikely you will get anything worse than that.

These "speed vigilantes" have not yet been given any powers to prosecute or have their evidence used in prosecution.

These new signs are great. It's interesting to see how late you can brake from around a ton towards a 30 limit, making the sign light up, but without exceeding the 30.
