How does this scam work?

I'm selling a car, advertised on here and on autotrader. I had a call last week from Vehicle Media, I told them to do one and that I wasn't interested in paying them X amount of money for no leads etc.

A different person called me today from the same company asking if I would be available tomorrow for a viewing. Now without giving my address or any other details (car is currently not at the address it is registered to as I am out of the country for work for a few days), I said I would be available on Thursday and for them to put their "buyer" in touch. Car is a not-very-exciting but tidy sub £10k Merc and I would hardly think that anyone in the market for that type of car would employ a company to source a car for them so how does this scam work?

Will someone (employee of Vehicle Media) turn up for a viewing on Thursday and "put in a offer" that I have to pay £89.50 to accept for it to fall through a few days later or what?

Anyone know of this company? On the phone they call themselves "Vehicle Advertising", email says they are called "Vehicle Advertiser" and website says Vehicle Advertiser Solutions... lovely wink

Now I know it's a scam, just wondering how they think they will get the monies from me!

I cant quite work out where the hell the companies would actually advertise a car, Who the hell buys a car privately(normal car, not something niche) from anywhere other than auto trader, exchange and mart (which I understand is dieing a death or already dead) or from Piston heads?

Exactly! Now i could understand if this was some kind of ultra-rare import/prestige/classic car but FFS it's an 8 year old Merc.

They will say they have a buyer in your area looking for a car and for a fee they will put them in touch.

Yet shockingly, when I was told there were six people within 30 miles of my house on their books looking for Exactly my car (what a spot of luck), I offered to pay them double the fee, but not up front. I would pay double in the event that one of the people they sent bought my car. They declined my deal, how strange, especially given how certain said cold caller was that my car would be bought by at least one of their prospective purchasers......

Had a similar thing selling my car. They also asked me where I got the price from for my car as it was below guide price compared to book and average selling price. As it was the only one for sale in the UK at the time and guide books don't include imports I found this quite amusing.

Vehicle Media called me from 019972655480 & 01992788052 trying to get me to sell my car with them. I was nearly hooked then I typed in phone numbers online and found all these blogs about them. The man I spoke to was friendly but very pushy, making general chit chat about his wife and kids etc. It was £89.99 to sell my car, guaranteed sale as there were sellers in the area that were interested in my car. My car would be a flat price so the people coming to see my car were not allowed to haggle me down - sounded too good to be true. I told him I didnt have any money and he started asking me personal questions like, how can you have no money, what are you surviving on etc.... He then spoke to his supervisor (supposedly) he then came back and said for £44.99 they could sell my car for me as a goodwill gesture! He said he would call me back in half an hour to see if I could borrow the money from a family member (how rude). I blocked both numbers in my phone, but half an hour later I got a call from a witheld number - suprise suprise - it was them, I told them I google their site and it all seemed dodgy, he said I could pay through paypal as a secure payment, I felt under pressure!!! I just said, my friends told me they were dodgy because they had used them before and never heard from the company after the money was sent. He just said to me 'screw you for wasting my time' and then abrubtly hung up on me....... DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY - If they were professionals they would not use that kind of tone with you and certainly not swear! THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM - They do not have a guaranteed seller around the corner! BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I have just had exactly the same thing and also from the same 01992 numbers.
They have called me 6 times in the last week each time a different person. Two names to look out for are a woman call Bianca and Andrew.
Also beware of a company called Car Data. They are doing the same thing.

Sorry to say, I just fell victim to these people and they debited my card for £89.00, got a call from a woman 1st and then told her I was busy, then a guy a few days later, told me they have buyers for my vehicle who get finance and I will receive £100 more, he then told me he needed my account details to deposit the money for the buyer.

That was 1 week ago and now notice the £89.00 gone from my account.....

Why was it this amount and not more, obviously they have my account details now and could debit it as and when they like I guess, just like SKY do.

Where do I complain?

Cheers Graham

Speak to your bank immediately. It sounds like they've obtained your bank details fraudulently (by telling you they want to deposit money, rather than debit it!) and have taken money without your permission.

If you gave the details from your debit card and the bank say that they can not stop payments because you gave the details on the card ..........Stop the card and tell the bank you have lost the card they will send you a new card with a different number etc and the old card will be invaild ,this is what i had to do once.

It certainly would. 'Charge backs' really hurt anyone selling anything through a credit card/merchant facility. If they get enough eventually they'll lose the ability to use a payment facility, most banks or credit card companies will claw money back at the drop of a hat, if you say ''they took it without my express permission'' etc.

FOLKS. I CANNOT STRESS THIS FIRMLY ENOUGH. I AM A SERGEANT IN THE POLICE AND THIS COMPANY IS A FRONT TO DEFRAUD YOU OF YOUR MONEY. DO NOT USE THEM. TELL THEM THEY ARE A FRAUD AND YOU HAVE PASSED THEIR NUMBER AND COMPANY NAME TO THE POLICE. THEY WILL HANG UP. IF THEY WERE REPUTABLE THEY WOULD NOT ASK FOR MONEY FROM YOU, YOU SHOULD BE GETTING MONEY FROM THEM.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU HAVE TO PAY TO SELL YOUR CAR (OBVIOUS EXCEPTIONS LIKE AUTOTRADER FEE ETC). IF THE DEAL SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, THEN IT PROBABLY IS - IT IS THAT SIMPLE. TAKE THEIR DETAILS AND CHECK SITES LIKE THIS FOR INFO, DO NOT GIVE YOUR BANK DETAILS OUT OR SEND THEM MONEY.

I AM SELLING A CAR JUST NOW AND ADAM ALEXANDER CALLED ME FROM VEHICLE MEDIA ADVERTISING LTD, ON 08716 632 979. HE STATED THE PRICE I HAD LISTED WAS CHEAP (IT ISNT - BOOK PRICE VALUE FOR THE MOTOR). I SAID IT WAS NOT CHEAP AND HE STUTTERED, DONT BE CONNED BY THE EASIEST TRICK IN THE BOOK - THE OLD "OH MAYBE I CAN GET MORE MONEY FOR MY CAR", NO YOU PROBABLY CAN'T AND THEY ARE JUST SAYING THIS TO CON YOU.

SOMEONE ON THIS SITE ASKED WHY THE LOW AMOUNT REQUESTED. WELL IF THEY ASKED FOR £500, NO-ONE WOULD BE DUPED, SO THEY GO LOWER, £40, £80, £100 AS THEY HAVE MORE CHNACE OF SUCCESS. THEY PROBABLY CONTACT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE A DAY, DEPENDING ON LISTINGS. IF THEY MAKE THREE OR FOUR CONS WORK, THEY MAKE SAY £400 PER DAY. THAT'S £2800 A WEEK OR £11,200 A MONTH BASED ON FOUR SUCCESS OUT OF HUNDREDS OF CALLS - TAX FREE - YOUR HARD EARNED CASH.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T FALL FOR THIS - YOU WILL LOSE THE MONEY AND COMPROMISE YOUR BANK DETAILS WITH ONE CLICK OF THE MOUSE!!!!!!

ALSO - FEEL FREE TO TELL THEM WHAT YOU THINK OF CON ARTISTS AND FRAUDSTERS, BE AS COLOURFUL AS YOU LIKE - PUTS THEM ON THE BACK FOOT AND WHEN THE CALL ENDS.....AND IT WILL END RAPIDLY AFTER THIS, YOU WILL GET MORE SATISFACTION HAVING TOLD THEM WHERE TO GO.......AND YOU WILL NOT BE OUT OF POCKET.

AS FOR ANY REQUESTS FOR WESTERN UNION TRANSFERS AND FORWARDING RECEIPT COPIES - FORGET IT. AGAIN YOU WILL LOSE WHATEVER MONEY YOU SEND AND RISK COMPROMISING YOUR HARD EARNED CASH TO THE SCVM OF THE EARTH.

HOPE THIS HELPS MAKING YOUR MIND UP. NEVER HAND YOUR CAR OVER UNTIL MONEY HAS CLEARED IN YOUR ACCOUNT, OR YOU GET CASH (AND CHECK THE CASH TO MAKE SURE THE PILE DOESNT HAVE A REAL NOTE ON TOP AND MONOPOLY MONEY UNDERNEATH). GOTTA BE CAREFUL OUT THERE FOLKS - WORLD'S A SINISTER PLACE THESE DAYS.

ALL THE BEST. SGT BOB
I fear for the state of our police service if a Sergeant cannot write correctly, nor check the date of a thread before posting. Although, I guess it isn't that old.

Do they not teach you about capital letters in the BiB?

I've had similiar experiences in the past when selling cars and on several occasions I've told these scum of the earth exactly where to go. I remember one exchange where I told the guy to p*ss off because I wasn't interested and hung up. He proceeded to call me back about 5 times, I was at work and so didn't want to answer the phone as I would have lost it completely but he eventually gave up. Why are companies like this even allowed to operate? Surely Watchdog or somebody should have exposed these fools a long time ago.
