My father has an S-Type 2.7V6D.

I understand this has the 6-speed ZF gearbox. It has recently been holding in a particular gear on harsh acceleration and refusing to change up. It has occured in both 4th and 2nd a number of times.

We have now reached a satifactory conclusion to the problem, but wanted to know if this was commonplace?

The problem was the gearbox holding in gear when it should have been changing up!

The solution, after five workshop visits, a new gearbox.

RFN,

Just for info, my S-Type is now on its fourth gearbox. This has been due to a strange intermittent whoosh noise on change down (normal changedown, not via kickdown) caused by failing inner seals in the box, apparently. I have to say both the main dealer I use and Jaguar UK have responded to the problems very well and I have not had to push for any action. All done under warranty.

The last gearbox was fitted at around 60,000 miles and the car is getting on to 78,000 so it looks like the current box is OK.

Cheers for your reply Leaper.
Seems like we are not the only ones with gearbox issues! I think I may have suggested that the main dealer had been less than useful, which is not the case, they are approx 85 miles away and have been helpful at all steps of the way, even when they couldn't find anything wrong on the first few visits. Loan cars have always been provided (and always an automatic - as my father can longer cope with a clutch) and we are now very grateful that the issue is hopefully resolved. Only time will tell...
