I drive to Barnsley a lot and am getting fed up of the M42, M1 combination, especially wilth miles and miles of 50mph average speed limit.

Does anyone know a good route from the Midlands to Barnsley or Doncaster? I dont want the trip to take forever, but if the roads are good it will be a chance to air the G33 and relieve the motorway monotony.

Thanks

Nick

Not ideal to get to the East of the M1, but I always prefer to go up the M6 a bit then head across the south of the peaks from about Stafford. (Normally heading for Chesterfield). You could go up a bit further then there is just Sheffield to cross.

At least it will miss all the 'Dangerous Cameras'. The M1 bit is especially dangerous at the moment.

Either of these will give you a change of scenery but neither are likely to be any quicker: -

1) A46 to Coventry, M69 to Leicester, A46 (round the north of Leicester then becomes the Fosse Way) to Newark then up the A1 (potential problems at Longbridge Island over M40 and single carriageway section of A46 has a number of 50mph sections with speed cameras)

2) M42 to Kingsbury Junction 9, A446 past Belfry to Bassetts Pole Island A38 and Lichfield then A38 past Derby to MI Junction 28, MI then M18. (The scenery between Derby and the M1 on the A38 certainly beats anything on route 1)

I came home via route 2 on sunday, but that was in the Audi A6. The G33 whilst fast is not a happy place on the motorway, you feel small and vulnerable and cant hear the radio. I want to try and avoid motorways where possible and enjoy some hopefully decent driving roads. It normall takes me about 2 hrs but 45 mins or so to the journey won't be a problem if the roads are enjoyable

I Know what you mean. You are even more exposed than I am in my Marcos.

So here is an idea for an alterantive to Route 1 that cuts out as many M Roads as Possible and maximises the Fosse Way: -

A46 to Stratford then B4086 through Wellsboure to B4455 Fosse Way. Follow Fosse Way to A5 then A5 to M69 then MI 21 to 21a and then A46 and back on Fosse Way. DONT GO AS FAR AS NEWARK but take the A6079/A614 through Ollerton which joins up with the A1 at Worksop.

If you do that you only use motorway betweem Hinkley and Leicester and then Worksop to Doncaster. (Hope you have plenty of time)

PS The sting in the tail is Stratford and being a Good Alcester lad I am sure you have your own way of dealing with that.

Thanks that looks like a good route. I can pick up the Fosse without getting hung up in Stratford.
