I just answered the phone, and a machine started talking to me! It asked if I was my wife, which, of course, I was wink, then it told me it is a certain well known establishment calling to impart some important information, to my wife, and could I answer some security questions before they went any further?

At that point I hung up, somewhat peeved that companies can't even be bothered to hire an Indian call centre to do their calls now, but use an automated robot.

Anybody else had any robots call them recently? confused

Scam, lots of them operating now. One example http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/103724.html google will show you lots more

If anyone rings me from my bank I hang up and ring back so I know I am speaking to the bank and not some dodgy scammer.

Surely you'd never give security answers to anyone who called you?

I have an Egg credit card and they have a computer that rings you to confirm suspect purchases.

Lloyds TSB (or whatever they are calling themselves these days) do the same.

Got one from Egg a while ago just to check I really wanted to make a payment of 1200 grand to someone...which was nice. At least they're checking. Why pay someone when you can automate it.

See above.

ETA: for some reason the PH formatting refuses to work, so it would have been the bit in bold, IF it worked.
