Outrageous Trade In!
Discussion
Thinking of going normal
as I need to be able to:
a) Hold Conversations on the move
b) Start the car at 04:30 in the morning with out the entire road hating me
c) Use the phone in the car
So I wander down to a BMW dealer
to see what I can get trade in. So the dealer looks at my 2000 Speed Six, with 18" Spiders, Tracker, Sports Exhaust, AmrourFend and working aircon and starts making phone calls.
He calls me back! He has been working hard but no one really wants these cars at the moment... but he has found someone who will take it for £15k
Anyone else had any trade in offers that seem a bit low. I know running a TVR is expensive but as I have only had it for eight months I did feel that £2k a month depreciation may just be a little steep.

I think what the situation is the fact that the BMW sales department you went to would probably not know who to ring on this type of car.
With the later cars, especially the speed six based TVR's, they tend to stay mainly in the TVR Main Dealer Network, most Main Dealers won't buy as they are totally stocked up on their stocking plans.
The factory will keep pushing new TVR targets till the end of the year and this creates more part exchanges for the network, which ties up their cashflow.
It's no excuse for a bad bid but the people who are bidding are thinking
`Hey I may not sell this till next spring'
..therefore they are bidding between the legs low to cover the usage of the money over this timescale.
Perhaps it's time to stick it into SOR from where you got it from or PH classifieds ??
Hope that helps..

I had a similar experience when I tried to sell my '99 speed six a few months back. I called more than 6 dealers, both franchise and independant, and only one would even consider the car but wouldn't give me a price as he "didn't want to make me cry"
Reasons were a mixture of too much stock (as you've already heard) but more frustratingly, the fact that it was a speed six or had 20k miles on it !!
Put it on Pistonheads and it was sold in days for a price that didn't make me cry

From experience always difficult changing makes of car when trading in.I think the most anoying thing is " nobody is buying these cars at the moment" What the "salesman" and I use the terms loosely means is if he takes it in part ex he might actually have to behave like a real salesman to sell it.TVR dealers are'nt go to take it as it is additional stock and they are going to have to put there hands on a fair wad of cash.Probably better selling private or find a dealer who has both franchaises.
My BIL went on a test drive in the new Mini Cooper and coincidentally asked what the trade in value of my Cerb would be (96 4.2 recent engine rebuild) and they said 8K
.
8K against a Mini Cooper??
There is a story in this months Autocar that dealers are willing to miss out on potential sales by offering either no trade in or very low trade ins on part exchanges against new vehicles, obviously very prevailant at BMW dealers.

There is a very slight defence here, these dealers will obviously not stick a Cerbera on their forecourt so they will phone someone who will buy it from them and pass it onto a relevant dealer (i.e. TVR or specialist). However, cars like TVR's are not favoured by these traders because they can be hard to sell on, especially at this time of year.
I am not defending these silly p/x prices, but at the same time I'm not surprised either. The best way is to sell privately or as suggested go for a SOR.

And I know one BMW, well Alpina actually but it's the same thing really
salesman who's dealership does ever now and agian have none BMW stock if it's a bit special, he gave us the story of a TVR breaking down on a test drive, probably something simple but it never makes a sale easy if you arrive back in a AA wagon, and he openly said he'd never sell another TVR again, if he had one in stock he'd pass the sale onto someone else, if you get a chap like this he's going to give you a low price just because he doesn't like the marque

Yeah, c'mon Matt, what you got?
Rumour mill said "Cooper S" but please clarify.....
BINGO!
Will do us until I can get this thing out of the way and it'll be a nice little runaround for 'er indoors come the spring when an uberschnellerchariot should be forthcoming.
After being mugged I found a far more helpful dealer not far from your good self who has sorted me far and above my expectations.
BMW Dealers are sometimes bad but broad brushstroke generalisations are silly because you are ignoring the fact that there are some diamonds out there if you look hard enough...

Just waiting for a final call to see what the TVR Centre will give me for it. The sold it me 8 months ago for £32k so this should be interesting!
Hi
I don't see how a good news could come from a dealer regarding p/ex price. This is all very unfortunate and I have suffered from it too.
Consider putting up the ad on Pistonheads (& Autotrader) with five hi-resolution interior & exterior car level photos and keep driving till the age of the car and 'real price' match. Private sale may be very difficult if >£21000 so why not enjoy the car down to £16000 for eg. If the sale is required urgently it is all too easy to be exploited - as many enthusiasts are. Having a Speed Six doesn't help either as the dealers would make you believe that you have committed the blunder of a lifetime by buying a V6 rather than a V8. Good luck with your sale anyway.
