After doing a search, I found a thread that mentions the Halfords 072 battery not fitting anymore, as the new one they only sell is too high.

I'm not into buying a battery over 100 quid. Just a replacement.
Is it a case of taking the old one to my local motor factors and matching one up. Or is there a named battery that does fit perfectly that is available now? And is not over 100 quid....

Cheers

I just measured mine and noted the spec (cold cranking amps, position of the terminals) and visited Halfords armed with a tape measure. That was a while ago and came away with a 072 I think but there must be a modern equivalent that matches (?). About 70 quid.

also interested and in the same position as cadecus.

I currently have a halfords one, but when I needed to attach the + jump lead to the terminal, it was too far under the hole in the f1 pannel so a better fitting one is what I need (as the halfords one is not holding charge anymore.)

The 'old' Halfords type 072 is still stocked at some halfords brabches, my local branch didnt have one, but they rang up other branch and found me one 20 minutes away - so its worth asking them.

Does anyone have a battery where the + terminal aligns with the hole? I always have to whip off the F1..

Alan. Is it referred to as literally 'the old type 072'? Or is there another code that will distinguish between the two? Just so it makes it easier dealing with the numpties that I generally get lumbered with on the phone...

Exide batterys are the muts nuts IMO good cranking amps and a 4 year guarantee. I've had one for three years now and no problems. Think it was around £60. Can't remember the part number but i can let you know tomorrow.

Ged - I bought the 'new' 072 and took it back to the other branch that had the 'old' type in stock, and got a refund/swap on it, so luckily the receipt has both types listed.
The 'new' one has the code 960211, and the description HCB072
The 'old' one is code 371526, HB072.

Good luck with the numptys at Halfords smile

By the way, thenonly difference between the 2 is that the negative terminal is 3mm to tall. So it may be possible to file off 3mm from the Negative terminal, and splice in a slightly narrower battery clamp on to the cable - just a thought.

Judging by the number of people who mention that their Halfords battery won't hold charge/is knackered/needs replacing, buying a cheap battery is not always a cost saving.

The Optima I fitted a while back turns the car over far better than the 072 battery that was on the car a year ago, fits nicely and can withstand being allowed to go flat (not that it should) so I think it's £125 well spent. No concerns now like "will it start" when you are out enjoying the car.

IIRC a battery of 200mm height including the terminals will fit.

Yes but, no but, yes but.......the Halfords ones are guaranteed for 3 years, so every 2 years I just go back and swap it for a new one smile

the new "072" from halfords are £96 how well do the optima red tops fit? is it worth bunging another £50 towards the battery fund for a better fit, better accessible live terminal, more CCA's and a longer life probably.

what guarantee to the optima red tops carry?

and where is the cheapest place for one that people have found.

also is postage an optioin or does that mess up each cells chemical mix due to it probably being turned around all shapes and shook in transit?

model numbers to

Recently bit the bullet and bought an Optima Red Top, loads of room for it to fit and I can even get to the negative terminal with the battery in place smile
