Bit of a proud daughter moment here...

My dear old dad - aged 73 - passed his pilots licence today.

It's not the full PPL as he's too old but this has been a dream of his since being a small child (was too small to be a pilot in the RAF)

Apparently its all a bit of an anti-climax now but I am so proud of him I just needed to shout it from the roof tops.

Just goes to prove that you're never too old to do anything!

He wont do a sky dive with me though.

Apparently planes are for flying in, NOT jumping out of frown

He's still really active - still sails, runs and is really active. Has more muscles than my OH. Which is rather shameful tongue out

Aye - we're off shopping on the bank holiday weekend!

Years of spending wisely and not outside of their means has resulted in mum and dad living life to the full in their old age.

Congratulations! I hope to be like that in my later years. I do wonder sometimes if people get to a certain age and then behave in the way that is expected of them. He's obviously refusing to conform and good on him!

Excellent, I will pass this tale onto my wife, who is always looking for tales of elderly inspiration for use in Lectures to trainee clinical psychologists.

One thing though, ask him not to fly at 35mph along the scenic flight paths around the country please hehe

I can ask him if he'd talk to her if you like.

I know he's my dad - but he is a really amazing bloke.

He does dawdle driving a little (If you ever read this dad...I didn't say anything ok?!) but doesn't like to be hurried. hehe

So for the microlight people out there - what would you recommend? Apparently the training plane was like a proper plane, but about 2kg under the max weight limit for a microlight.

I'm still dead proud biggrin

LGF

Get over to the BMAA forums for advise on what to buy. I take it you will be at Popham over the bank holiday checking out all the new toys.

Oh yes I am!!

As the airstrip he flies from is quite close to Popham he knows the area well now - and it'll be our first trip together as soon as he decides whats going to happen. I am so unbelievably excited.

Will you be going?

I've been advised to get him a copy of "airstrips and fields of the UK" or somesuch book - basically the air version of the good caravan park guide - does anyone know what it is actually called?

Lockyears farm strip guide and a copy of pooleys or similar.
Compton Abbas has a great cafe as does Wellesbourne. If you are flying for fun then a good cafe should be your guide in where to go.
Yes I'll be at Popham, not sure which day, but as I am being let out on my own I might stay over on Saturday night.
