I subscribed to Pocketgpsworld for their camera database as an improvement to Garmins's stock file but cannot confirm whether the new file is downloaded onto my Nuvi 660. I have POI set to on but how do I confirm this - I'm concerned as the unit still shows the old Garmin database is present but nothing about Pocketgpsworld's being there... confused

... any tips please? biggrin

When you copied the database across did it tell you how many cameras etc were now on your sat nav system? There should be around 13,000 I believe.

Thanks, do you mean tell you 13,000 on the PC or in the Garmin itself? Mmy point is that unless the Garmin tells you it has received (13,000) POIs you can't confirm they are there and in use.

When downloading the PC should tell you that it has transferred from the .zip file somewhere near 13,000 POI's.

Zoom in to a spot where you know there is a camera, and it will show up on the map.

You can also tell when the unit is plugged in to your pc by searching the appropriate folders on the unit.

p.s. Don't forget to turn off the Garmin camera database or it will get confused.

Thanks Del smile I can do this but I can't see that it'll confirm that I've downloaded the latest camera POI for that location, only that one is there (eg: it could be old - have an old speed limit).

I was hoping that, like when you go into the Garmin's database list (Cyclops' database is listed along with a version date) it would list the presence of the PocketGPS database in the same way, but I guess not as, after PocketGPS download, it shows nothing new is present (why not Garmin?).

It might hurt, but you do need to refer to the Garmin Handbook (also on-line) for your Nuvi.

You need to create folders on you PC and Nuvi for the data and use the Garmin POI Loader.

The following is someones "help" for loading POIs.:

Anyway for those who might have the same frustrations i had, this is wher it went wrong.

The garmin works like an ipod in that you create the daa in a folder on your PC and then, via the garmin POI loader you transfer the data to the device.

You cannot then add to the data on the device you have to erase it using the uploader program then reload you new files in one go.

However, when you do your very first upload it place a file on your device called POI-GPI. and your data is contained within the file.

If you then want to upload an amended file it erases the contents of the POI-GPI file but does not actually remove the folder itself.

Leaving this empty folder on the device caused absolute havoc with future uploads.

So the answer is dont just erase the contents of the folder erase the folder itself which has to be done manually

Hope the above helps.

Thanks all I've solved it now...

After PocketGPS download go to "Where to" - "Extras" - "Custom POIs" and all the PocketGPS camera files are listed (proving they are present in the device). I used the "UK Speed Zoned Complete" file download option.
