I never knew this but apparently you can go into any supermarket and haggle with prices of any goods.
There is the 'RRP', but one of the R's stands for 'reccommended' and therefore is not law that this product has to be sold for that amount.

So in effect you can take your trolly full of shopping and if for example your bill came to £55 you can tell them..."how about we call it £50?"

They can of course tell you to buggger off ... haha

So all of this £x.99 or £x.05 advertising pricing that is supposed to try and trick the mind into thinking its a little cheaper than what it is....wonder if you can consistently ask to round it down to a nice round number so that you do not get a wallet full of shrapnel on everything that is bought with cash ???

Doesn anyone on here do this with regularity? Any success?

cashiers/till monkeys in supermarkets rarely have the authority to change the price, meaning you`ll have to que up at their customer service desk with the other freeloaders for the honor of some spotty oik telling you to fk off and shop somewhere cheaper if you dont like it smile

harsh but there you go :P

I could see it having some success in smaller shops, butchers, grocers etc but not a supermarket.

Good god no, there are many on PH that are of the opinion that you can't even expect/ask for 33p off a bill of over £30 in a shop in which you might spent hundreds of pounds annually. This idea would blow their minds at the absolute unfairness of it all!!!!

Remember kids, if you can't afford it, don't touch it.

Used to work in a B&Q and surprisingly a lot of people would haggle the price and customer advisor(certain ones) had the ability to give them a deal on bulk buys or a lot of shopping.
Quite a few would cheekily allow people to use their discount cards.
Although the fun of working their was getting to the discounted items before the customers, got some very nice bargains :P

This is something my dad regularly does.
He brought a PC for my brother for Christmas, with my help, and managed to get almost 500 knocked off the price and got a web cam thrown in. He is a very good haggler. biggrin

If you don't ask you don't get. Especially in this market, many places would be willing to do deals on bigger buys, food shopping on the other hand, I wouldn't bother with.

Recommended retail price... its what the producer of the goods sets as a 'fair' price for thr seller to sell at. Didnt realise anyone thought it was 'law'...

psychological pricing, its a marketing policy... Well if you think about what the price is before you buy it then you will realise if it is cheap or not! admitidly many people do fly through supermarkets(only glancing at prices, which of course the marketing lot hope for) so not to be stuck in isles with screaming brats or old people holding you up as they talk to their other geriatric friends moaning about their being too much choice!...

Yeah it started at £1299 and he got it down to £800 so just about 500 off but with a £25 web cam biggrin

Proves there are bargains to be had if you have the balls to haggle.

I'll haggle the price on pretty much anything, anywhere, but at Sainsbury's...?! ermm no. For starters trying to explain the concept of haggling to a 15 yr old with more piercings than a porcupine's fk buddy doesn't bear thought, then there is the thought of them calling a manager over to try and explain it to....

Give me a small independent though and they seem to almost expect it biggrin

From what I remember RRP, had no standing, whose recommended price was it? could be anyone's.

MRP on the other hand was different, as this had to be the Manufacturers recommended price.

Try haggling with electrical goods and the like and you may be on to a winner, I did this when buying 5 portable TV's some time ago. (For work before anyone asks)

just realised that it was over 25 years ago when I was at college when I was taught this, so may be utter bks now

If I am buying something expensive, few hundred £'s upwards I nearly always try to haggle (what an odd word haggle is..)

Few examples of my efforts..

£25 of Free delivery on a £150 freezer,

£50 off an £800 TV in Comet

Free £100 handsfree kit from vodafone (flogged on ebay!)

Free upgrade from £500 to £800 matress from homebase.

Some places have more flexibility in thier prices than others, Homebase and B&Q are normally quite good if you're buying big stuff, like a bathroom suite, dont expect 50% off a bag of nails though.

One memorable failure was in PC world, I had a £900 PC and about £300 of additional bits and bobs loaded on the trolley, asked for a discount, bloke said no, asked for the manager, he said no. I'd have been happy with £50 off the lot, instead I told them to poke it up thier bottoms and they had just lost a regular customer.

If I know for absolute certain fact I'm already getting a bloody good deal and the supplier is making next to nothing I wont bother.

Have you just come out of prison? Long stretch? Retail Price Maintenance was abolished in 1964.

Working with you must be a barrel of laughs.

I wonder how you'd react if your boss took the same approach.

The boss would be me, I react just fine to myself thanks! wink

What I mean is I wont attempt to smash someone up on price if they arent makeing much margin on it anyway, if there is whopping margins in it, like many highstreet retailers then I dont have any guilt wink

Works the same at work really, we typically know exactly how much our suppliers make, 5% for shipping a box and providing us with 30 days credit is fair enough, 20% for the same service we might be inclined to beat them up on price a bit.

PC World biggrin this is going back to xmas 07 not 08 though. They also replaced a 3 year old game that got smashed in said computer when the disc drive went loopy. I'm quite pleased with them tbh, although I've heard some right horror stories from other branches.
But I think that he got the discount more due to the fact the day before he had brought 2 32" TVs. One my brother paid for and one as another brothers xmas gift (I have 3 brothers) So I think they remembered him.
