Which sub-600 hardtail?
Discussion
Chaps
Been out of the active scene for a few years and am looking to get a new bike. I'll be ebaying my Fisher Cake DLX (5" at each end) which isn't getting enough use (have never really got on with it due to the geometry) and chopping back to a HT.
Traditionally I've been a Kona/Orange man in the past, I still have a '95 C-16R frame (1" headtube) in the shed that I've been promising to build into a roadbike of sorts.
Anyway, I'm looking to get a nice hardtail (not necessarily new) and was wondering what I should consider. Was maybe thinking of a P7/Kilauea/Stumpy but as I say, been out of it for a while and was wondering where things are these days. I have a 15" 'dale F800SL but my mrs has inherited that so just kind of looking at what nice HT I could get in the shed to park up next to it.
Requirements would be about 3" at the front and hydraulic disks all round (if poss) but other than that fairly open.
Cheers!!

I've just recently been looking for something at this price point and these were in my shortlist:
Kona Cindercone
GT Avalanche 1.0
Claud Butler Cape Wrath D24
Trek 6000/6300
Specialized Rockhopper Disc
All seem quite close in spec. I went for a Trek 6300 in the end, mainly due to my LBS being a Trek dealer and them being a cyclescheme.co.uk participant, but also because of quite a few favourable reviews and an enjoyable test-ride.

two more to chose from. both highly specced for the price and a little bit different to the regular brands. Scott geometry is traditionally very xc focused (which i like) and genesis bikes are designed in the UK so naturally suit UK trails. personally i would go for the genesis and be a little different.
not sure why you want another hardtail though when for that money you could pick up a reasonable second hand full suspension bike. full suspension bikes have moved on a long long way since the early days and both compression and rebound are now far more progressive rather than the bouncy castle-esque ride that early long travel bikes. perhaps have a look at an older FSR or something?
as i said though, if the hardtail is what you really want, go for the genesis.

You get a lot of CUBE for your money too. I like the look of these ones.

i do like the look of that Genesis (especially the colour), although i do own a Scott and i can highly rate it. Perhaps you could even get a Genesis cheaper than what Evans are asking. Worth shopping around.
I used to have a Scott FX-3 back in the day, was my first full sus bike. That old shed with Junior T's on the front actually put me on a podium! I'm only starting to get looking properly now, and must admit I'd not heard of half the bikes mentioned (Genesis, Cube) and I thought Boardman only did roadbikes.
Boardman mountain bike:
