Realistic MPG comparison E320-E330 Diesel

Just wondering what the realistic MPG comparison would be for a E320 estate V's E330 Estate under normal driving conditions.

I am currently in the market for one of these (second hand circa 2002)any information would be greatly appreciated, not sure which engine model to go for.

Car used primarily for business use, I have a fairly long daily commute

I wasn't aware MB made an E330?

More info needed on the 320 also, 320 could be petrol or diesel as that size of engine was available in both.

Edited to correct myself, if its an estate you're after then a 2002 model will be the last of the W210s (i.e. older shape) if i'm right?

Yes they are both Diesels ! and It would be the last of W201 models!

Thats a new one on me as well, never heard of a E330 Mercedes.

Nor I, but have seen e330 printers, mobile phones cameras and such like.

I think fellow PH'er Parrot of Doom's yer man then, from looking at one of his threads in General Gassing earlier I noticed he has a W201 estate with intergalactic mileage!

ETA he has an E300 TD, possibly what you meant by E330? I'd assume the E300 TDs are the older engines, E320 CDi's are certainly the newer, not necessarily more reliable though if it's just a workhorse/commuting hack you want.

Errmm Muppet here again ! Should be as all have pointed out E320 and E220.

So if someone could advise on realistic MPG comparisons between the two.

My Father runs the 220 cdi C class and its very good on fuel by quite a coarse engine with it only being a 4 cylinder. I run 270 cdi in a ML and its certainly a beter smother engine than the 220 being a 5 cylinder. The 320 is 6 cylinder cdi and is a great engine but dose suffer from injector sealing problems in the head.
I dont think you will save much fuel by going for a 220 as the engine would have to work hard to drag a e class body around. I would have thought a 270 would be as small as you would want to go.

I run the E220, but the later 170bhp variant, for the age of car you're looking at it'll be the 150bhp. My 170bhp pulls the car well enough, is smooth and very torquey, but after living with it for 6 months I wish I'd gone for the E280 or E320 - so the 150bhp E220 may seem a little underpowered?

As for MPG, my driving has been pretty much all urban since I got the car, and have only driven it in cold weather, and I'm averaging 29mpg (not 33mpg as the lying trip computer is telling me!), which I think isn't too bad for a heavy car, cold starts, urban driving in a fairly new engine which still has some running in to do.

On a similar topic, is there more than one type of E320CDI W211? Do the facelift and pre-facelift share the same unit?

The 320 CDI engine has changed significantly over the years, in the W210 cars it was a straight 6 and the new versions are V6, Euro IV compliance came in circa 2004?

I had a W210 E320 CDI, 45MPG plus on the motorway but less than 25MPG around town. Worth the extra diesel for the massive difference in grunt over a 150BHP E220 CDI.

My wife has the E320 CDi and it averages about 41 in mixed driving, and she is no slouch. I occasionally drive a similar E220 CDi on mainly motorway work and it gets about 46 mpg so difference is not that great. The E220 feels considerably lighter but the E320 has considerable more urge and is a lot smoother.

Try and drive one of each before you make your choice. I prefer the refinement of the E320 but it depends on your own requirements.
