G50 Alternative?
Discussion
I my opinion 738 driver's comment about the SBC being a very old design even in LS form is incorrect. The LS series of engines first ran on a dyno in 1993, first production 1996. This series of engines have only bore spacing in common with the SBC. The fact that they are not an overhead cam design was a considered point of design by G.M. not a direct result of what came before.I know that those of you in Europe and England have grown up around overhead cams and consider them to be part of a modern engine design. But before you jump to conclusions think of what G.M. has been able to accomplish with the "VERY OLD" cam in block design. The motor is smaller and lighter than a similar overhead cam motor with equal torque. This low end torque with very tall top gears has allowed G.M. to post world class mileage fiqures in two catagories of vehicles the 24 miles per gallon in the Corvette and high teens in the G.M. medium duty trucks. Compare these fiqures to a overhead cam motor making this kind of torque and I think you might rethink how old the LS is compared to what G.M. needed to build to do the job at hand. Lee
Hi Mark
I'll make some calls for you and see what I can find! The ZFQ is a nice box but they still don't have the right ratios. I had a look at one yesterday at Gardner Douglas! I am told that Quaife are having clearance issues with fitting in alternative ratios. I have a G96-50 which is not an old box Mark and it has the right ratios but it did cost £7,500 plus shipping. There were a lot of upgrades carried out to my box, so without all the upgrades one could be done for less money.
Regards Dave

That was my point Lee!..........keeping things simple often produces great results......why fix things that were not broken! 'KISS' principle.
With my own very low spec SBC and four speed combo I can hardly condemn anything past 1968/1984 era!
Personally Mark I think whilst the 'aftermarket/specialist' transaxles have great idea's and engineering they might be a bit agricultural for daily driving. The sand racers seem to give them the toughest test's but they are looking for different qualities than most of us here.
CMS etc do sell some trick bits and mods for the Porsche units, Dave has a very well-specced unit which I'm sure will serve him well for his application.

Just maybe missing something here but i dont believe the factory run with modified gearboxes, or have ever. They hold various world records in the car. What exactly are you wanting to get out of the car. If you want it to be the /biggest /fastest/ prettiest, does that not mean you have to spend more on it. Even production cars are always being 'improved ' in the aftermarket world at extra cost. Obviously there are ideal ratios for gearboxes but that will also depend on whether you're racing/cruising/drag strip etc . . . . doesnt it?

Thought so, just asking because i cant seem to find one, and if i can theyre so expensive, or battered, or the wrong ratios arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
Cheers though.
they all have wrong ratios but they can be improved at a later date, the LS is awesome imo and i also think my mate 738 also believes it is. Simple is good, less bits to go wrongCheers though.

If your'e still unsure about G50 gearbox and RH change why don't you come over again and this time have a drive ? I'll make sure the insurance is OK and let you have a copy .
The factory usually have plenty of gearboxes but get one quick as I think they are getting scarce . I believe you can get a new one but they need an exchange ! I was lucky with my car as a contact had one ; a porsche breaker . he had never had an enquiry even from a porsche owner . That's how reliable they are and in the Ultima don't take much torque as the wheels spin before damage .
