If you're getting a joystick for a flight sim game as a minimum you'll need one that's got throttle and rudder controls as without them it's just not worth it. I can't remember what make & version I've got (it's wireless), but it was well worth the money.Or has anyone got any recommendations?
Once I was up and running and confident I ended up joining a virtual airline rather then just flying around myself. Look at http://www.airwegogroup.com/.
Also depends on your PC. If you've got an older one (i.e. a P4 etc)and mid-class gfx card then its better to go for FS2004 and pump the settings right up. If your lucky to have a newer one (duel/quad core) and good gfx card (or two 
) then get FSX. Again the more ram the better. The reason is that whilst FSX might look the nuts, you need a very good pc to get a good frame rate and enable all the eye candy, where as FS2004 can look good with everything maxed, (not quite as good as FSX) but doesn't require a NASA PC to do it. The only major difference between the two is the aircraft you get to play with (but you can download hundreds more http://simviation.com/menu.html) and the fact that FSX has better airports (it has trucks and stuff). Most of the flight dynamics are more or less the same!
On joysticks, I can recommend the cyborg Evo, only about £20 and will work for years (and many other games like BF2 etc.)

You sould be. Im currently running FS2004 with a p4 (2.4 Ghz) with a Ati 9800 PRO and 3.5 Gig of ram, everything is maxed out. I only get a few stutters around large airports and it doesn't help its running on a 22" monitor 
. You may find that increasing the amount of RAM you have is a cheaper alternative to a spanking new gfx card (unless its really crap), especially if you have VISTA.

According to Vista's funky system performance stats, everything in the machine is a 5.0 or better, except the graphics card which is a 3.2
New graphics card seems to be the best option!

You can download the Vulcan product manual here for free - http://www.irissimulations.com/docs/vulcan_manual....Shows how in depth it is. Everything is covered, controlled and used. All the guages work, all the buttons and levers do what they do on the real thing.

Cheers, after trekking around EVERY shop in town, I eventually found FSX Gold Deluxe edition (comes with some free expansion pack) in HMV. Bought a new graphics card, and a Logitech Extreme 3d Pro twist handle joystick.
I presume I can map the rudder to the twist action? If not, it's going back!

It's a Windows game so it should be detected and set in the control panel. I presume I can map the rudder to the twist action? If not, it's going back!
I use a Logitech T.Flight Hotas X and didn't have to set a thing.

Do you have any recommendations for UK airfield scenes for FSX?
I can't think of specific fsx scenery as I still use fs9.

It's good to see these screenshots are as blocky looking as mine.
WTF is up with this game? The graphics are absolutely poo. I'll admit that mine is the fastest machine around, but it manages to run it with everything set at or near maximum, and I'm getting jagged edges on everything. It must be 10+ years since I've seen those.
Pop up is also massive, which means I can never see the airfields, and as far as I can work out, the only way to navigate is to look for stuff.
I ended up landing a 737 on the M27 instead of Southampton airport as that was only strip of grey I could see.
Seriously though, are the graphics really that dated? I thought this was supposed to be the latest, greatest thing. I paid £50 for it!
