How to quit my job..
Discussion
I want to quit my job on Monday but dont really know how to go about doing it.
I work as a nanny for a family of 4 kids. Im leaving because the kids are brats,
the hours are unsociable and the family are not good to work for.
When i took the job she was adamant she would be flexible, however she gets arsey if i cant work at the weekend, or in fact during the week. She expects me to change any plans I have at the drop of a hat to accommodate her needs.
They dont discipline their children which makes my job twice as hard because I tell them off and the mother praises them. The mother doesn't work, and they have an au pair (who only does the cleaning but will help with the kids when necessary.) So if i leave they will in no way be stuck for childcare.
They dont know I want to quit. I have no contract with them and i am paid in cash at the end of the week (or on Monday)
My boyfriend thinks I should tell her im quitting face to face and tell her why.. this risks her arguing with me and potentially getting me to stay. she's not very nice when she is annoyed and I don’t want to cause a scene.
I wanted to tell her i had to leave the country urgently and wouldn't be back anytime soon so she needs to find someone else. This would be the easy option. (I am working in Munich, I live in England)
My mother thinks I should write her a letter explaining why im leaving and turn my phone off. And just not go to work, that way she cant talk me into going back or have a go at me.
This job just makes me miserable and its really not worth it..
I know this is only my second post but PH is such a good place for advice.

You may need a reference in the future. Be formal, hand in your written notice. Part on good terms. Most of all, get out of there! What do you think?

I have had a few live in nannies.
We've never had a 'quitter' becasue we have always been reasonable.
She sounds like a nightmare.
BUT, don't just leave her in the s
t. Be a grown up.
"I'm just lettign you know I won't be able to work for your from next week.."
Make it clear she has a week to find a replacement.
Don't give notice on a Monday - as she may work you for the week and not pay you if you are not coming back. Give her a week's notice on, say, Wednesday.
How can she 'talk you itno staying' if you don't want to?
You're a uni student? Not a 12 year old.
Good luck

as above, inform the woman when you receive your wage that you will no longer be working for her due to personal commitments, or something like that
at least then you are not out of pocket, but do not worry about her getting angry, you'll encounter it a fair bit once you leave uni and get a full time job!

Whether this woman and her family are a nightmare or not, you should be professional.
You're paid CIH so you have no obligation to give any notice.
However, it would be the done thing to give at least a week's notice, but make sure you're paid anything you're owed before you leave.
If you think they won't pay under those terms then wait until the next pay day, get your money and tell them you won't be coming back. Job done.
