Quick Q re Final Cut Express 4

Hi all

I pretty much a numpty when it comes to video editing software so I hope someone can help...

I've got video footage of me & my co-driver at a couple of sprints. What I'd like to do is split the screen vertically, and run footage of each of us running against each other to see who is quickest where etc.

I've had a quick play with Final Cut Express 4 (running on a mac powerbook), and I couldn't work out how to do this. I could only manage to get one clip running on the screen at any one time. Is it actually possible with the software I've got?

If not, anyone know what I need to get (hopefully not too expensive)?
